I have been buying and selling used gear on forums for 10+ years heres some advice for the newbies.
TL:DR Document document document! (And buy insurance)
I recently sold an Ecotech battery back up and was sure to pack it and insure. I think i had about 5 layers of bubble wrap. Before I sent it i took pics of all 6 sides of the back up and some of the cables. Inspite of a careful wrap job and adequate space in the box USPS beat the hell out of it. (See before and after pics)
This leaves me the seller in an awkward position as both I and the buyer have to spend time dealing with USPS insurance and I feel bad that the item was received damage.
Leaves the buyer in an awkward position because they were expecting to receive the item they paid for in the condition shown and they have to go through the USPS insurance and meanwhile have to figure put what to do about replacing the item.
As the seller always fully insure your packages and take pics of the item before packing and of the packing and keep track of your tracking number.
As the buyer if you suspect damage or even if you dont. Take pics of the 6 sides of the outside of the box before you open it, take pics of the packing, and finally check out your item for damage and document that too.
For both sides keep open, honest, and frequent communication though this crappy time.
