Do you mean adding a valve before the softener? I don't think that a water softener has much direct affect on the operation of an RO unit, these just exchange one ion for another, and the RO unit will work the same amount to remove them in either case. I have a well and I just take my RO feed from the tap. Shoot, I even use warmer water by adding a bit from the hot water spigot to speed production.

If you have hard water I would hook up after the softener. The ions the the softener removes can scale the membrane easier than sodium ions.
