Wow, need to vent. So my dad offered to build a canopy for my 525XL to house my 3 brand new Kessil A360's (after I bought $$$$ T5 lighting and decided I didn't like it). I guess I made a typo in the measurements and the depth of the canopy was 1" too far -- so only 3 sides touching at once (the canopy sits flush like the stand does). Ugh I'm so angry at myself for that and feel bad for my dad who put some serious effort into paint matching that finish.
Well, I needed lights on the tank to support the corals anyways so with three sides touching we figured it'd be totally fine for now since I'm the only one who touches the tank in my house (just me my GF and my dog). After mounting the lights I had to open the front of the canopy (now only 2 sides touching glass -- didn't realize this)... and then I accidentally bumped it with my stupid head. The canopy and lights crashed into the water almost completely dunking two of my A360's (the third got lucky). I immediately removed the lights and what feels like a gallon of water came out of each of them. Fortunately they were off so I know I didn't short them. I went into emergency mode and started disassembling the lights, just guess how to do it since no time for directions.
Turns out you need a tiny little torx bit to get the front lens off. Well all I have are big automotive tools so I had to sprint to Home Depot. Of course it's Sunday so they close early. Got there at 8:01. They close at 8:00. Lady wouldn't let me in despite my begging (yeah, I was that annoying guy :(). She was quite mean about it too which was the icing on the cake for me.
So now I'm sitting here with my soaked Kessils, no open hardware stores, no bit that I could jam into the torx bit without fearing stripping it. They're just sitting in rice now but I'm doubtful. I've heard of people splashing them by accident but these two were fully dunked and I have no way to split the housing apart -- I just have the top cracked and them sitting in rice and a dry area. Can't get to them in the morning because I absolutely need to be in the office tomorrow for a project.
I'm so angry. Fortunately I have 2 AI Hydra 26 Gen 1's from my old tank to sustain life for now. Good thing softies and LPS are pretty tolerant with lights.
I'm so beyond mad that I even thought it was remotely a good idea to try that canopy on. So mad at myself.
These lights were not even TWO WEEKS old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now I have (potentially) $700 worth of lights to buy to get things going again. And dang it I think I like the colors of the Hydra's better.
