Sand (carefully press down and wiggle the base rocks until they seat firmly in place and won't sink further). Unless of course you are doing a bare-bottom tank. The sand will also give a lot of extra surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow (once your tank is properly cycled).

This could be a new way of aquascaping .
curious to ask why not sit the rocks directly on the glass .

the way I have always done it .
place rocks first , sand around the rocks .
if you place the rocks on top of the sand ,
Sand dwelling livestock can burrow under and cause a collapse .

I believer I have seen someone use egg crate ( light diffuser ) before .
but could never understand why ( at that time under gravel filtration was popular

Starboard (basically cutting board) for bare bottom or sand. Egg crate works with sand and I have had no issues using it. Place either in first, for egg crate, throw a thin layer of sand to fill the holes, place rock and then rest of sand. For starboard, just place rock and then sand.

I got white abs board and contoured it to the rocks shape and glued it on. Not a single Rick touches the glass
