Some kind of polyp. Look like the brown or green ones that grow out of control though.

looks to be yellow polyps.
I would separate it from main rock work

I always wanted them, got them, and removed them as they were invasive and do pack a punch. Pretty is not always desirable

The guy said they were sun polyps. However googling just doesn't seem to look the same as these.

Ok. So basically I won't have to be feeding these every single day but I should watch out for them spreading uncontrollably, right?

Yes. I always liked the yellow polyps but they do need to be controlled.

Get those out of your tank. even if you think you might like them now. They will take over and you to get rid of them once they have taken over will be a nuke job or all new rock. Good luck.

They are yellow polyps and also aggressive and hard to control. That said. I like them and am willing to do the extra work to have them. If you keep the rock seperate from your main rocks they are no issue at all.

Absolutely.

We have all been there. When we first start out we are all so happy just to have something live and spread. Then you start exploring ways to control their growth. I learned with Kenya Trees. Those things are vile weeds.

I think it was 20 bucks for that particular rock. The rock itself is sort of perched on the ledges of the 3 surrounding rocks. Is that enough separation you think? Or does it need to be perhaps its own sort of mini island in the substrate.

You did not get ripped off badly. And I would say if you would like to not fight with them constantly they require their own mini Island.

Side note I'm not as ticked off about the fact that he sold me something that could spread so aggressively without a little warning as I am about him convincing me to buy an urchin to add to my CUC. I came home and did some googling to find out he sold me a pencil urchin that are apparently not so reef safe. Who sells someone 200 bucks of corals and then an 8 dollar urchin that could potentially wipe it all out along with everything else already in the tank. I just don't get it. I try to support them as a local business but this is what keeps me going back to buying online instead.
