What do I need for a perfect tank?

Just out of curiousity how are the temperatures in your tank. Are there any large swings? I know that this can cause corals to go south quick too.

It's in there. I don't make this stuff up. :)

Marc, I replied to a post about this article you posted elsewhere in the forum... lemme know what you think. I didn't find that being mentioned in the article (About the lifespan of carbon).

Harry - You tricked me! I thought I was going to read a rhyming poem when I saw your post above!

i would have to say all the above... set up a fuge get a good skimmer and keep the fish load down... lights anything from leds to t-5 over a 40... or if u can afford a decent chiller id put a 150mh over it... i have a 40breeder with a 250w mh and 150w of vho actinics... got a good chiller so water stays cool...

I'll have to re-read it again. It was either in Part 1 (the link I provided) or Part 2. What I took from that article was that it really is only good for about 72 hours, then it's done.

Wow, I thought carbon had a longer useful life than 3 days. that is crazy. I will definately read the article, thanks for posting. Based on that information, I'd say to change out your carbon more frequently than monthly. ;)

Other than than, remember nothing good in this hobby happens fast!

So I thought my 40gal was in good condition and for once in this hobby everything was going smooth... Then BAM my tank starts falling to pieces (in a non literal sense).

This is a marineland 40gal long (48-13-16)
As of now I have a reefevo 120w pendant over it(planned on getting 2 in the future), 2 marineland magnum HOB canister filters, and some other pumps

WELL my tank is going crazy,I will wake up and a coral will be dead or browned out...it is really giving me 2nd thoughts...............

Anyways if price were not an option what all would you get to make this tank near perfect

Skimmer,Sump,Reactors,Lighting

I have a 3part doser that should be here early this week, manual dosing isnt working anymore.

Ive thought about switching to a 400w MH pendant, should I? or just keep the leds?

Any suggestion is a good one!!

In my opinion, there is no perfect tank, the sea is impossible to replicate... As for a good tank, always go with an oversized skimmer x3 total tank gallons(I run a Reef Octopus 150 with mesh mod on 50 gal total). Also have good turnover, at least x10 DT gal. And have some nitrate and phosphate removal media. Some great addition would be alternating flows. Let's see a build!

I also believe a 400w is too much, I run a 250w xm 20k on a 19" tank and I had to lift it 20" from the water surface!

put a skimmer on there and start topping off with a diluted kalk mix and skip the dosing all together it should be all you need with weekly or bi weekly water changes....hth.
