What do you do when your tank matures?

Most of us enjoy starting a new tank or at least filling it with new corals and fish. But what happens when your tank reaches full blown maturity? Do you sit back and enjoy or what?

I do agree that a lot of the fun in reefing is adding new pieces ,or fish. But there is still a sense of grattitude knowing that you have a full blown mature tank. Now just sit back and enjoy it. No need to mess with the small stuff. Frag colonies where they are fighting and make a little money on the side.

Crash it and start over haha!!! No clue honestly I change tanks more than people change water so I haven't ran into that problem yet...:tongue:

My tank is finally starting to mature, I have no frag room left, so I just sit back and watch. The only problem is that I have a huge carpet nem, and fish tend to "dissapear" so I need to stop by a lfs or something.

when our 220 matured i would sit back and just enjoy it but it crashed.so we got a bigger tank and are starting over.

Question for u guys with the mature sps tanks my sps tank is about a yr in and finally starting to grow out my question is will the different sps frags grow where the avail space is or do I have to frag it when it touches another sps frag ?? I'm concerned that maybe I added to many my goal is to see no rock just sps coral!!

I think sps just grows where it can, if they grow together they will fight each other for space.

You will just have to watch how they interact with each other. Monti's seem to be able to touch each other, no problem but certain acro
s will overpower others. Millies are one of those that need space. They usually win in the acro wars.
I have many that touch each other and are fine, You just have to keep a close eye on them.

+1, I'm nowhere close to a mature reef but this is what I look forward to.

The first time it happened to me, I upgraded, from the mature 75 to a 200 gallon Deep Dimension. Now, the 200 is on it's way to becoming mature, with several large SPS colonies. When the time comes, there are a few colonies that I would consider removing, to make room for a new addition or 2. Other than that, I cut frags now and then. My problem is, inside the 200 Deep Dimension, I have 4 frag racks full of frags and small colonies that I want to move to the rocks. There's no way I have enough room...lol.

Sooo, recently, I added a 75 gallon tank to our collection.

Soo I have a Sps stag about 1/4 inch away from a pink Millie I hate to move either I could move the Millie because it's on a plug but its growing good where it is! I could frag the stag !
Or just see if they touch start growing apart???

Upgrading is an option but if you are allowed to, you can add a new tank and plumb it into the system. Seed it with coral from your display tank and then sell frags off of those colonies. This way you have 2 colonies that are growing out. If you ever loose one colony for what ever reason, you will have another one as back up. Do what ever you want to with the frags, trade or sell.

I started out with a 6 gallon eclipse, went to a 29 gallon, then a 37 gallon, and then a solana, then a red sea max, then a 125, and finally a 300 gallon. the wife will not let me go any bigger so I had to add 60g and 40g frag tanks. Now that I am done with upgrades, I cut back my colonies and sell off the extra growth to help pay the bills.....

Look into upgrading. If you don't want a bigger tank, look into replacing some corals that you really don't care for with new frags you like...or just sit back and enjoy the tank, fragging every once in a while to get some extra cash for supplies. That's what I do, I haven't bought anything out-of-pocket for my tank in over a year....but I will be upgrading to a bigger tank.
