I recently read about someone using silicone sealant to seal their threaded fittings, so I wondered if others have used it with success. I have used the WRONG type of paste before on ABS bulkheads and ruined them. if you use paste or some lubricant type, please post up which one. DO NOT use the paste shown in yellow tube it will eat the ABS bulkheads

Thanks for playing.

I voted teflon but I have used silicone as well. Silicone doesn't always completely set in the middle but it doesn't seem to cause any trouble.

The white is PVC and the black is ABS. That is where most people get confused, I know I did until a plumber educated me. It says on the label for ABS use a different formula. The stuff James404 says is good, I have used it for years as a bus mechanic.

I tried to glue a PVC pipe into an ABS bulkhead and used the glue for PVC. I did not know that will not work, there is a glue for transitional, PVC to ABS specially for it.

Don't use the glue for threaded fittings.

I used the paste in the past, but I would get small leaks sometimes. When I decided to take apart and redo I noticed it didn't look like it was doing anything so I switched to teflon and all is good. I even am able t get away with NPT fittings on the 1/2' flow meters using a little more teflon tape than usual and no leaks.

Ptfe paste. Anything else is doing it wrong. It doesn’t take much either. A small bead on the end of the male threads so that as you screw it in it spreads evenly.
Teflon tape is intended for metal pipe fittings. Although it can work for pvc too much and you can crack the fitting, too little and you can get a leak.

silicone, I suppose, could work in a way similar to ptfe paste but will be messy

just do it right the first time and don’t worry about it.

almost 35 years, too many tanks to count, and never a leak.

It destroys Sicce pump housings also.

I have gone to using Teflon tape again, Just have some finesse so you dont crack fittings.

Will this stuff work on PVC to ABS? I was told it will not bond, that was why mine leaked. Was told to use the green stuff for ABS to PVC called transition cement, PVC pipe into ABS bulkhead.

Don’t bother gluing threaded fittings, just use what I linked, it will 100% work and is the correct application.

I don't glue threaded fittings, but the PVC pipe into bulkhead slip fitting which is ABS needs a special cement is what I am trying to say.

Oh I see. This thread is about threaded fittings so kinda assumed. Some say you need a special cement for bulkheads, never had an issue. I switched to using this for all my slip fittings now:

I don't know, it says for PVC which I think only for PVC. To be safe use the green stuff made specially for transitioning PVC to ABS.

Thanks for trying to help me on this, I had a leak because I used PVC cement for my PVC pipe to ABS bulkhead. Switched to the green stuff and no leaks. Just putting it out there for Pedal Dangit.

Don't use silicone sealant on threaded fittings.

can you explain why not? the video I saw (wish I could find it) was from an experienced reefer who uses it for all threaded fittings and said you can disassemble it and just brush away the chunks and re-use if needed. I have thought about it and can't see a reason why it shouldn't work
