For testing with only a few soft corals (beginner), I only test:
Nitrate, Phosphate, Alkalinity (dKH)
*salinity I consider a given for everyone

I also test pH every so often but don't ever do anything about it. (Mine's usually fine in the low 8's but dips to 7.8 in summer heat waves with all windows closed for AC for long periods of time)

Leathers like Nepthea, toadstool, Kenya Trees. Also cheap zoas like Eagle Eyes, Watermelons, Scrambeled Eggs, Bam Bams. Avoid high end zoas initially (a lot of them melt for no reason).

I'd say cheap zoas -- I have two and they're going strong in my tank so must be easy ones.

Depends on personal preference obviously but that's what my daughter likes and my LFS has 'em on their cheap $10, $20, and up racks so that's what I went with.

is that a xenia?
A candy cane is neither a Xenia nor a zoa. Google “candycane coral”

Here’s a picture:

They come in many other colors.

Candy cane is a type of lps - very easy species. I would wait until you have softies figured out though.

Good beginners are any leather, zoas, and Xenia/cloves/gsp. Be careful with the Xenia + relatives, as they spread like weeds if not controlled.
