What is needed before buying corals?

What do I need to ensure before spending money on corals?
Water parameters
Lighting
But is there something I must check prior to getting corals? Or is there something that is beneficial to do before getting corals? Is it a time thing? Trying to get info before I start that path. I don't want to buy any till I get what I need or make sure of what needs making sure of.

I have these lights off of amazon coming. I just set this aquarium up and its my first rodeo doing all this.

I just set this aquarium up and its my first rodeo doing all this. I don't even have fish yet. Do I need to wait till i have fish for a while before getting them?

If possible, I would highly suggest trying to get some starter frags from members of your local club etc to gain some experience before spending $$$ on retail corals. Many people have beginner corals they are willing to share for no or minimal cost. It is very frustrating to spend your budget on the first few corals, they die, and you don't even know why.

Corals are very delicate animals, I would suggest to start off with fish for a few months, get the hang of maintaining your tank and testing the water and learning to manage through the algae cycles and learning to troubleshoot the different problems that will come up.

Also, check this out, lots of good info. I have those lights. I like them pretty well. They do grow coral.

Best advice is to go slow, research, read everything you can about keeping a reef tank, then read some more.

Be able test salinity, temp, Alk, ca, MG, Nitrate, Phosphate.

Get them all to normal operating levels and then get them stable.

When you can hold these stable for at least, 1 month, go for softies. At 3 months stable try LPS. At 6 months some easier SPS and at a year, anything you want.
