What is push notifications?

Hey guys
Ive not been a member long, but I keep getting at the bottom of the page about permission to enable push notifications, as im not technically minded I have no idea what these are and whether I should enable or not, Can someone tell me what they are in plain English, not technical jargon please.

Push notifications are basically alerts directly to your phone or pc when someone does something you're subscribed to. Kind of similar to when the little email icon pops up when you have an email. If you select the little x and then dont ask again it should go away:)
