What is this??

Hi, I was just looking at my tank and noticed this weird white hair algae on the glass of my tank?

The picture isn’t the best, but those little white spots are it. I also tried removing it, and it was slimy, and it seemed to come back after a bit. Do you know what this is?

I don’t see anything in the picture above, but I do see a completely pristine looking tank.

I would assume it is the very first few days of it running, and at this stage I wouldn’t worry much about anything, because the uglies will come and go as the tank matures, and it’ll be a lot more than what you described above.

Give it a few months, cycle it, and then see how it progress.

Thanks for the tank, but it’s been a couple of months, since I haven’t been able to get a light yet. But as this other person said it’s kind of stringy?

By the description provided above, yes it does sound like something bacterial, but that’s about as much as one can tell based on the information provided.

Missing light makes perfect sense and would indeed result in a pristine looking tank. You need a light to get things going, and you’ll then start to see algae, cyano and other various bacterial growths as you do.

Yeah, I got my tank at the tail end of my school year, and I was going to travel a lot in June, and July, so I didn’t want to get a light and really start things. But now that I’m done with traveling, I’m looking into some lights. I’ve been looking at the noopsyche k7 mini, and I think I’ll be buying it today

It doesn’t seem you have any thing live in the tank yet. I would keep the lights off for a few days.

No worries, I don’t see any problem leaving a tank in this state.

Some people store rock in salt water with no light for months, sometimes even years, so that when they’re ready to setup their tanks it’ll already have the bacteria population established.

Just make sure you’re really cycled before introducing any live stock - a small dose of ammonia and making sure it disappears would validate it.

I forgot to ask, how could I get rid of this maybe bacterial thing? I also got another picture

I just noticed these tonight, there are a couple more around the tank, but none seem to be in the water. Also more white stringy things seem to appear even when I get rid of them, and it’s only appearing on the glass?

Shot in the dark but try maybe Microbacter 7 … might “re-balance” things …

The bacterial thing will likely go away by itself once there is more competition available over nutrients.
Also a better flow might help.

As for the picture - this looks like a salt creep. First of all, since you left it alone for awhile I would check the salinity, because it likely evaporated quite a bit.
Salt creep removal can sometimes be tough when not removed immediately, if using hot RODI water doesn’t help, you can carefully try to use a magnet or a sharp razor, but be careful not to leave any scratches.
