What salt is everyone using?

I use Red Sea blue that I filter through a coarse mesh to remove any insoluble particles. I was going to switch to Instant Ocean because of better cost and had ordered 4 large buckets from chewy during Black Friday special last year. However, the phosphate values were above 0.5 ppm in freshly made IO, so I went back to Red Sea.

I just switched from Reef Crystals to NYOS. Even though NYOS is more money, I can’t justify paying $80 for a 160 gal bucket of Reef Crystals.

Interestingly enough, the same amount that I eyeball and use to add salt to my water changes via red solo cup comes to a much higher specific gravity with NYOS than Reef Crystals, which appears to differ from other posts in this thread.

I’d you read what I posted above somewhere. I tested RS Pro, TM Pro and IO the reef. Per 1/2 cup there is a higher SG on all high end salt vs IO.

That could in a few cases be due to using anhydrous magnesium and calcium salts (Brightwell claims this,,though it is not an advantage or disadvantage). More likely , it is just a function of the particle size and distribution of the ingredients impacting the bulk dry density of the mix.

Ive seen this posted a few times about NOT mixing your saltwater on a continuous basis. I'm curious where this comes from and the thoughts behind it. What would be the difference between being mixed and heated in my tank vs being mixed and heated in my brute ? Obviously your saving on your electric bill of course.
I try not to heat my water the whole time but sometimes it will sit there a week maybe even 2 before I get a chance to do a water change being heated and havening a pump running in it.

I only been doing this for a couple years now but in regards to continual mixing or non mixing stored salt water to the best of my knowledge a small power head to keep it circulating is fine but you don’t want to blast it with anything strong. It also depends on the type of salt you use. Anything that has high alk calcium etc has a greater chance of precipitating out with over mixing. Just my two bits.
