What Social Media Do You USE?

Other than forums, I got out of all social media in 2020. I haven't missed it at all. I actually felt a sense of relief when I disabled my bookface account.

There was too much vitriol from people that I knew well enough to know they aren't really like that. I decided that humans aren't ready to use a tool as powerful as social media and just walked away.

Late to the party, but I’ve been curious how people’s habits have changed. I’ve started using Reddit more for quick tank updates and TikTok for short build videos, even though I never expected to. Anyone else shifted platforms lately or found a spot with especially good reefing content?

This place is my new social media. Nextdoor, in particular, is absurdly toxic with political banter and attacks on people. I had to delete my account. Facebook, eh. I go on for marketplace. Insta is cool for videos and stories. Threads is terrible with partisan nonsense everywhere.

I'm getting really tired of everyone arguing, attacking, accusing each other. We all have the rights to our opinions and I respect that, but at the end of the day we have a lot more in common with each other than some of us think.

Well actually I do have a facebook account from 2009. I made one post after joining then deleted it. I now just use it to check the market place now and then. The video was from The Onion, discussing the CIA program's renewed funding.

Instagram and youtube have the best content imo! Any social media can curate to your desire, but I find those are the most appealing aesthetically and informationally.

Crickets, that's what you'd get.

Social media platforms don't care about accuracy - too hard to measure. They care about engagement. If you engage with creators that are typically accurate, you'll get more from similar creators... but since they can't measure accuracy, you'll still have to manually vet all those recommendations, which kind of defeats the purpose. (And I know that you likely knew that and expected it)

Anyhow - to answer the actual question of the thread, technically I use Reddit, but that's more of a pass-the-time-at-work thing than anything else. The way Reddit works leads directly to the creation of echo chambers and hive minds, so it's essentially impossible to have a nuanced discussion on anything without either just getting everyone agreeing with you or everyone dunking on you. And if you ever want to lose faith in the education system, Reddit is great for that too - such poor reading comprehension, it makes my English major brain hurt.

Other than that... I have a Facebook for business reasons (don't post on it, but I occasionally need to research companies I'm about to call), and I've just started using Pinterest to track my tank inhabitants and manage my fish wish list. Just based on what I see when I pin something to one of my boards, no way would I ever search through Pinterest for anything - so much AI slop on there it's disgusting.

It would have to be Youtube honestly (since we're talking social media and by extension it's predecessors lol). Youtube has the ability to let you see video length media and follow what you're interested in and then by extension come to a conclusion and then more research. I finds it sparks good information building off of what you're already thinking about but like the above comment mentioned, a lot will lead you to reddit and then probably r2r lolol. IDK if any social media is good for accuracy, that's where you have to decipher for yourself :)

I bounce between Facebook groups for tank tips and Instagram for quick eye candy too, so I get the appeal. Lately I’ve even used social media screening just to get a better feel for folks I trade coral with, since it gives a quick snapshot of who’s who without digging forever. It’s been handy for avoiding sketchy swaps and keeping things smooth in local reef circles.
