What SPS with Angels?

Hi all!

We've recently acquired a pair of Colins angels and they've been doing well, eat frozen and nibble at the rock and sand all day. After about a week in, at least 1 has developed a taste for a beast mode chalice, a JF freak hair frag and an Aussie maze brain.

We keep them pretty well fed, but clearly corals still taste better. :p

In your experience, what easy to keep SPS have you kept that dwarf angels don't go after? Fast growers preferred. Nothing high end as we just don't go for $100 1 inch frags. LOL!

So far they are not interested in a monti cap and other encrusting monti's, a setosa as well as frog spawns and hammer and echinata LPS and a huge gorgonian.

Its all about fish they could eat anything try testing with some cheap acro maybe good luck tho sps is hard but fun :)

My dwarf angels when I did keep them would just nip at sps a lot of the time, but wouldn't kill them just limited polyp extension. after removal polyp extension was awesome.

But as stated also its always by the fish own personalitiy, I have a purple tang that eats Xenia and a yellow tang that loves to eat the tops of my fox flame only, I think it think the yellow/green tips are algae...

Stags are good for them as they grow fast, Tri color hardy and fast growers

One of my angels actually ate the skeleton of the Aussie maze brain! I was shocked! I figured tissue, but skeleton, too!

I have a friend who sets up aquariums and he has said he pulls more tangs out of reef aquariums for eating corals than angels. Probably a statistic there (i.e. more tangs in a reef than angels) but interesting nonetheless and does speak to individual fishes personality.

We've not kept a lot of SPS over the years, but if that is what angels don't eat with enthusiasm, then that is what we'll keep! :)

As mentioned, all on the personality of the fish.
To start at low cost point, you can some try Montipora digita. Come in all kinds of colors, grow fast in the right conditions and aren't very demanding.

As long as your corals are healthy angel don't kill Sps only reduce polyps extension. I have gold flake, regal and flame in my reef tank and I have no problem with growth or color.

I have seen multicolor angels mouth the slime off acropora until the coral starts to rtn. Any angel that has a similar “lippy” mouth I would be careful of. The flames and other types I have never had them hurt anything other then polyp extension.

Same here with my flame back. I have great color and growth, but lack PE.

I have never seen my flame touch my SPS, but I'm pretty sure he'll give a swim-by nipping every now and again.

They do minimal damage just get some fast growers. Fill the tank up so the damage is dispersed.

Thanks for all of your replies. We did have an incidence a couple of weeks ago where we went to zero NO3 and PO4 and some corals were not doing so hot. Makes me wonder if they were picking at the corals due to them not doing so hot.

Pressing on and making it work around the angels since I love them so much!

Colins Angelfish are pretty amazing so I can see why you would press on. I agree on the Stag choice and perhaps try a Green Slimer, they grow pretty fast too. Good luck!

Thanks. I had my heart set on a pair of angels and when I saw these guys, I had to go for it. I was hoping since they are a deep water species, I wouldn't have to worry as much about them picking on corals, but c'est la vie. I feel like they are always watching me, even when I'm not feeding them! LOL!

have you also looked at Genicanthus sp. (Bellus, Wantanabei, Lamarck, Melanospilos, etc...); They are about as reef safe an angel you can have.

I have a pygmy. I feed 4 times a day without any issues so far.

I did, but my husband thought they looked like big damsels. LOL!
