What was everyone’s first growth they remember

Hey everybody. I know everyone remembers starting their first tank and the coral they put in. I’m sure you don’t remember all the coral but I know you all remember the very first thing you saw get a new mouth or polyp or branch. What was the exciting thing you first grew. For me it was a dragon soul favia. Everyone said they had slow growth and it did. but outta no we’re one day I saw 5 new little mouths when I went to feed. It went from 2 to 7 and I was so excited. I wana hear and possibly see your guys firsts!

First growth I can remember is a green Duncan I got with 2 heads. It stayed that way for about two months. Then week by week it sprouted head after head. Now it has over 40 and is the centerpiece of my tank. It’s my fav coral 3 years later.

Nice! That’s some good growth. They grow like crazy. I can’t believe how fast mine grew new heads wish my torches and hammers grew so fast.

Surprise you get gsp now. Stuff never goes away. Is that why you inherited it you think? . I like it but definitely gotta keep it separated or it’ll take over.

When my first LPS ( a large green and purple frammer) spilt into two heads.

I was so happy. It was the most expensive coral I'd purchased as a student and was really glad it did well.

I got my first reef tank in 1987. Back then the coral available was really limited. SPS wasn't even a thing yet. Goniopora were only green balls. And true OG torch corals were green and for $70 you could buy a colony the size of 1/2 a football.

But the first things we got to grow were GSP and mushrooms. At some point the first zoanthids showed up and they were just mustard colored polyps (stalk, head, tentacles, mouth all a translucent yellow) and these would spread too.

The LPS that were available were Elegance, Fox Coral, Torch Coral (Wall), Hammer Corals (Wall). And the goal wasn't to grow them, the goal was just to keep them alive.

It was about 1994 when I saw the first Acropora start to show up in the aquarium trade. These were brown sticks. They shipped them to the US in plastic bags with the acros wrapped in wet newspaper - same way freshwater plants are shipped. Our lighting back then for reef keeping was yellow. We were using halides, but they weren't yet being made for the aquarium trade - they were made for street lights and warehouses. So the brown sticks were brightly lit brown sticks - with no longevity at all.

Yeah it’s crazy how far things have come for sure. I remember the days back then when it was just about survival. hence I think why we got bigger pieces back then as well because if they stayed that size and didn’t die that was a win. Now we get scraps and do our best to get them to grow. Thanks for the great share.

I have the same one and at 7 months and it looks like it did the day I bought it!

I have a green flower pot that has taken off since I added it! I was so excited when I seen it moved from the plug to the live rock!

They love eating do you feed it?

Right it’s such a great feeling knowing not only have you not killed it but it’s growing and surviving in a little glass box.

I do not... Lol. I use to spot feed but it just lead to a huge alage bloom in my tank. Tank is almost a year old now.

What do you feed him? I got some stuff from polyp labs as well as some reef roids from red sea.

Early 2000s my first reef tank had the typical softies, anthelia, xenia, gsp, but the most fulling was my candy cane which was adding heads. I told my LFS, he asked "it's putting on skeleton?". Later he gave me a tiny porites piece that came in a live rock shipment, which I was able to save.
