Thats funny! It would be a nightmare to breakdown 7 really full reef tanks. You would almost have to give it away. I think most reefers tanks can probably "auto-pilot" for a week or so. But after that it is all downhill - starting with the sensitive acros.

My Dad passed last Christmas and we went through this with his tank. Nobody wanted to get rid of it, but I lived an hour away so I couldn't always do maintenance and we knew nothing about it. Numerous stops later to the LFS where he got it and now I have moved it to my place and started my own journey in the hobby. I'm happy to keep his legacy going.

My husband knows how to put the fish and anemones/plants into bags and to take them to my Favourite LFS as trade in . Then the owner would probably buy all my equipment as well .

The aquarium is the last thing I would be worried about. The harsh reality is that most family members will not even be thinking about the tank for the first month after we pass. I know this because when my son was in the hospital for three weeks with sepsis I did not even think about the tank myself. It was on autopilot while we stayed at a relatives house near the hospital.

The one thing I would highly recommend is taking photos of all your equipment, from tank parts to the stereos, guns and even tools. Then Mark each picture with the items used value on eBay. This can put tens of thousands of extra dollars in your families pockets and they won’t be ripped off.

Ugh it doesn't even bear thinking about. My husband doesn't do hardly anything with any of the animals let alone the tanks. Everything is automated enough though to last for probably a month without care before stuff started dying. My next house I plan on setting up so everything could last indefinitely as long as the power stayed on and someone refilled the feeders and tossed frozen in occasionally.

My tank? eh. Wife is intelligent enough to realize she wouldn't know what to do with it, and smart enough to call one of my reefing friends who would. Someone would get a bargain, I'm sure. Oh well.

Tank isn't the biggest concern, though...

One of my worst nightmares is that something would happen to me and my wife would sell the contents of my gun safe for what I told her I had spent. OMG. I've given her the names and numbers for several of my shooting buddies. She's got explicit instructions to call them and let them deal with it.

I used to make a living buying dead people's stuff and reselling it. No matter how passionate you are about reefing, collecting sports memorabilia, or whatever your passion is, the people you leave behind won't care if they weren't passionate about it too. And if you have a reefing buddy you want to leave it to you better put that in writing. Otherwise, your heirs will just put all your stuff up for sale for pennies on the dollar, split the proceeds and move on their way.

Bag up all the livestock and give it to my lfs. Sell everything else or throw it in the trash which is probably what will happen. Also at 72 I’m probably closer to this fateful day than most on this site.

When I had to sell my house and move from Maine to Florida, I didn’t have the time or patience to sell my tank bit by bit, and take a drubbing on the cost I put into it. So, I contacted a local university which had a robust marine sciences program and donated everything in exchange for a hefty (listed everything at full retail, including livestock) tax write-off. Kids from the school came and broke down everything! Saved me having to pay taxes on the sale of the house.

Id assume either my father or older brother would adopt my reef as both have had reefs before, my father started keeping reef tanks back in the late 80s/early 90s
