What's this torch worth?

That’s probably easier to sell to the LFS as well. They can turn around and sell it the same day vs having to drag themselves when already very busy

My good friend imports coral and I’d be willing to guess that the LFS may be thinking $50 per head is a fair value in terms of trade or store credit. That’s just my guess. I do know that my friend can get these for relatively low cost. BUT then you have box fees, shipping fees and etc. all said and done he personally sells online and would ask anywhere from 100-250 per head depending on different factors. But he also has a hard time moving big pieces and that would be cut up in his business.

It sure looks amazing though!

I think that is what I'm leaning towards. I've never sold or even thought about trying to sell corals before. So, I'll start looking into different ways to move them. Having a friend that can frag them for me is a good start.

Two and it was so small, "fresh" was the term the guy at the store called it, he wasn't sure if it was a torch or a hammer. He ended up selling it as a hammer. When it started to grow, I realized it was a torch and had potential to be nice, so I went back and got a second one. That one is now about 14 heads.

What Skey said is definitely what the lfs experience would be. You take the loss from ease and lack of risk on your end. It can be a hassle fragging a bunch and coordinating meet ups with a bunch of people sometimes. If you have active local FB reef groups and you want some cash or perhaps a coral swap, check there first and frag off for any takers there. Give the rest to the store and get free salt, carbon, food, etc. for awhile

I have a friend that is set up for fragging & offered to frag it in exchange for 1 or 2 heads. I actually have two of these colonies, the first is at least 16 heads, the other is 14. Maybe sell on Facebook Market place?

That’s a good deal. Do that but get him to frag into 2 head pieces. Sell them on FB marketplace for $150 for a two head frag. It’s a great deal and they will move as quickly as they will. people would prefer to buy two heads just in case one decides to jump…. I do anyhow.

The torch is only worth that your LFS or whoever is buying it... is willing to pay for it. Full stop.

You can ask whatever you wish, but in the end, the value is only what you can fetch. That same hold true for anything -- the gold bar in your safe is only worth what somebody is willing to pay you for it when you decide to sell it - it doesn't matter what anybody else says the "value" is.

Heh, there's a local LFS here with a tank right next to the register with all sorts of high end corals in it.... On the front:
"How bad do you want it".

You missed the point in favor of being contrary.


This wasn’t about retail pricing -- it was about what a retailer (in those case) is willing to pay. That’s not set by you, me, or any perceived “market value,” but by what the buyer is actually offering. The seller can accept, ask for more, or walk away. That’s the entire point. That is how commerce works.


“Market value” is vague at best—which market? Local? Online? Wholesale? Retail? P2P? Barter? The coral is only worth what someone will give you in exchange for it, no matter what you think its “value” is -- or what the “market value,” in whatever market, claims it should be or what anybody else claims it should be.
