I love em to death, but I'm finally putting my foot down (or my wallet is). So I'm wondering, what filter pads that come in at a good price have you found to be effective?

I run them on top of my uv (which I shut off like a week ago and never turned back on. So essentially just catching left over food, waste, and all that good stuff
Oh ok so just filter socks basically , then buy some replacement filter socks? Poly filter does a lot more that’s why it’s expensive

Yes, The thing is I kinda wanted to get away from running a sock because they're just a pita. Im running one sock in a diffrent chamber already

I don’t know, but I wonder what would happen if you tried to use those dried sponges they sell as shower sponges.

Just a theory, but since sea sponges build their structures using silica, using them as filtration might fuel diatom growth…

Oh, and I personally love this stuff:

I agree, washing felt filter socks is a pita. We make a 4" disposable filter sock that might be just what you're looking for. The top flange assembly is reusable and the light weight filter element is disposable. They cost less than a buck a piece when you order a pack of 30. Follow the link below for more info. Let me know if you have any questions.
