my Dad passed away in 2010.

my Dad and I snorkeled 8miles off the coast of Bermuda in 1984 over the top of a live reef, ranging from 15 to 40ft deep....

scuba masks amplifies your vision. that day my Dad and I saw colors we both had never seen before in such great intensity. in both fish and coral.

my reefing now takes me back to that all day snorkeling trip when my actinics pop coral colors

Hands down the learning and the challenge of keeping hard coral by learning its needs and care...

The responsibility of keeping a fish (the whole system even) alive and well.
After snorkeling in a bay located 30 minutes away from Cabo and knowing
what's happening to all the reefs around the world, just having a piece of the
ocean in my living space brings me so much joy. It's beautiful and relaxing.

I am fascinated by the sheer complexity of marine ecosystems. Their ability (within reason) to gradually return to balance (despite our management incompetence). The fact that each system is unique and the unknowns outweigh the knowns even today. Learning one thing gets you down to the next layer you have to figure out. The way the law of the jungle and symbiotic behaviours coexist, and morph all the time. That there are so few "absolutes" in the hobby. It is also the perfect combination of artistic and scientific challenge.

Excuse me while I go rinse a bucket full of filter socks.

watching the euphyllia swaying back and forth. and reading on r2r, someone always has a weird hitchhiker I've never seen before and it amazes me what can come out of the ocean.

All of the above - not being lazy, but you all put it so well and I can relate to all of your posts. I guess I would add that this hobby was so tough (for me), and I had to learn so much and preserver through hardships that tested me to the core. But I made it through (for now ;-)) and am very proud of the thing of beauty that I was able to accomplish and maintain.
