I've seen so many differing opinions on powerheads out there and would like to hear experienced opinions for my particular setup. I have around your average 40 gallon breeder which I plan on stocking with softies and lps and it's my first time setting up a reef tank! My stocking plan is going to be a goby/pistol shrimp pair, assorted hermits, some nassarius snails, trochus snails, cleaner shrimp, a brittle star, clownfish pair, tailspot blenny, firefish, and a royal gramma.

So far I have heard a lot of good things about Jebao and them being both reliable and affordable (which I'm aiming for, especially affordable part I'm still in highschool) so I was looking at getting a just a single SLW-10, but if I notice not enough flow I will get a 2nd one. Any other good ones out there that anyone would suggest? I'm also doing a HOB SeaChem Tidal 110 with controllable flow which is nice if that changes anything.

(Also if anyone has any thoughts on my stocking plan so far that would be appreciated!)

I use the Jebao SOW 4, I use 2 of them in my 40 breeder. Plenty of water movement and have been running since I started the tank up in August of 2024. I take them out and clean them about every 3 to 4 months if needed.

My 40 breeder has the return pump, plus 2 gyres, plus one jebao slw placed behind the rockwork.. How much rock and coral you have will determine how much flow you need. Personally I don't think a single slw will be enough, thats not a strong powerhead.
