Who has a boat?

Our family has a long line of Navy it in and my Uncle's had boats. One more related to cruising and fishing in the San Fran bay and the other a 40 some odd foot sail boat. He would take us out around the Farallon Islands outside of San Francisco. Beautiful. Our plan was to sail it to Hawaii and back but I blew those plans out of the water when I joined the Air Force :) I was supposed to delay a year while my brother separated from the Navy then we sail. Uncle Sam said no - you must start boot camp sooner :D

Anyway I do not know how to sail but used to love going. I'd still love to make the trip to Hawaii one day.

Sailing a sailboat is easy, docking it is the hardest part. ;)Short of being dead into the wind the boat will move. The skill is making it to go fast and be ahead of the weather so you don't end up with to much sail out when the wind picks up.

I remember seeing a facebook post (when I was on facebook) from a guy up in Nova Scotia that posted a pic of a NJ registered boat that drifted up there from Point Pleasant after Sandy. It appeared to survive the trip pretty well considering and was looking to notify the owner that he found it.
My guess is the guy would rather collect the insurance money and get a new one.

Id like to get a pontoon boat to do some light island/sandbar partying, but the "bust out another thousand" saying keeps sticking in my head. Im just not a fresh water person. Saltwater fish just taste better. And fight better for the most part. (I know, I know....all you Michiganders and Wisconsinites are going to chime in about sturgeon....)

Yes you can and it does not take much wind to make it happen. For every time wind speed doubles and force on the boat is around 8 times stronger. 10 knot wind is nice, 20 knots things are getting fun, 30 knots it is really really exciting. Plus if you are sailing into wind, you have most of the speed of the wind plus your boat speed to deal with so a 20 knot wind could really feel like 30 knots across the boat. If you don't reduce the sail area, you lean way over, go slower because the force on the sails makes them want to turn the boat dead in to the wind so you have to counter it more opposite rudder which slows you down, so less sail can make actually make you go faster.

yup that’s the plan! Just installed new carb, distributer, and some other minor/cosmetic stuff. Now waiting to get the engine timing done.

my sailing days were on a Laser 2 on in land lakes. fun stuff until the drunken idiots driving Master Crafts came out to play.

My boats are always other peoples...lol! I crewed on a bunch of sailboats in San Francisco Bay. Those were the days!

I have always wanted to sail down in that area. Even though I live in Oregon most if my yearly sailing trips are on the east coast. Something nice about the water being warm when getting soaked on the foredeck at 2 AM while wrestling down a head sail.
