whole house filter in tank??????

ok so don't know if this has been asked or not... was thinking i have a free pump sitting around... what if i hooked it up to a whole house filter n put the pump in my sump with a paper filter in it n used it instead of useing filter socks... i figured would almost be the same as a canister filter but simpler... any thoughts???? i know the filter would be changed at least once a month if not more... let me know what think!!??!! thanks

So what your saying is you will filtering your water supply? What is the tds of that water? Filtering is great but if it is city water that will not what you want to use. Rodi water is prefeered.

no.... put the pump in my tank sump to filter the tank water like a filter sock.. i would be able to use a sediment filter or even a carbon filter if wanted to.. basicly the same as a cartraige filter but cheaper and easier to care for

It would plug in a matter of hours. Whole house filters are a much finer micron rating than a filter sock and are not designed for continous flows so would plug quickly. Maybe it could be used for a polishing once a month for an hour or so like a Vortex filter but thats about it.

The paper filters look pretty thin..... Been thinking of trying it tho....

It will not work very long, just not enough capacity and too small of a micron range. You are looking for something to remove large floaty particles, suspended solids. Whole house filters remove small sometimes microscopic particles so the suspended matter in the tank will lay of the filters surface and plug it rapidly. It has been tried many times and does not work but knock yourself out.

I am currently using one and I run it in line with my UV. You do have to change the filters about two times a month. But found running it after my Red Sea reef Matt keeps it going a lot longer and my tank is very clear. I do only run it at at night. 6 hrs before it shuts off in conjunction with my UV. I don’t use 5 micron but a 20 micron instead.

I change my 3 filter socks of 200microns twice a week and they are filthy!
Your filter would clog almost instantly!
