I'm really debating between the 7700k, the new intel chipset, or threadripper. Anyone wanna fill me on which would they'd recommend and why?

It really depends on how much you want to spend and how you use your computer. The 7700k won't compete against the new chipsets. The Intel will outperform the AMD on games but will cost almost twice as much to do it. The AMD will outperform the Intel on video conversion and 3d modeling.
If you match prices between the Intel i9 and the AMD Threadripper, the AMD will win across the board.

Intel 7820x is an i7, the comparable Intel chip to the AMD 1920x is the i9-7900x which is $999

Honestly, that 7820x is still a very powerful chip and will probably do 99% of what you ask of it. The new threadrippers are still super new and there hasn't been enough hands-on time with benchmarkers and such to see if it's going to be a reliable, high-end processor and not a mini-thermonuclear reactor sitting on your desk.

The AMD would blow it away. That Intel is an 8 core, 16 thread CPU with an 11mb cache. The AMD is 12 core, 24 thread with 38mb of cache. The Intel can be clocked slightly faster but it wouldn't come close to catching up to the AMD.

Completely agree with this. I've always for Intel to be more reliable. It will be interesting to see how reliable these new AMD processors will prove to be. I wouldn't buy one for at least a few months.

Makes sense. I was going to get the 7700k then the new chipset and new cpus came out and now I'm out for debate. I know intel is reliable and the single coral speed is quicker with intel but the threadripper has a higher multicore speed. Idk.

It's called the "bleeding edge" for a reason. If you are comfortable with problem solving and have the patience to research the problems, new CPU's are right where you want to be. Otherwise stay with something that has a proven track record.

Being a retired sysadmin I have been on both sides of the track and I did everything in my power to avoid the bleeding edge.

Interesting. I think I'll stick with the new intel chipset because i like their reliability and they seem to be stable.
