Why cant u keep sps?

Sometimes concepts are "rejected" because they are not easily understood. When people realize that BACTERIA and the micro biome is in fact the same in the soil as is on the reef, as in our gut, the language will continue to sound foreign. We will continue to use anti-bioticis, fertilizers, petroleum based medicines, and continue to watch our health decline, but hey, what do I know.... LOL

There are misuses of antibiotics and other chemicals - but - the life expectancy today as compared to the days before antibiotics, fertilizers (I guess there have always been fertilizers), petroleum based medicines, etc) is more than double.

I am "Pro" not "Anti" personally.
But if big pharma and agriculture work for you, that's good to hear. There are however, other, not so conventional paths to health and well being, as in medicine, agriculture, and reefing. I am stoked your is/has served you well. Best wishes along your journey

I was just joking that the attempt to revive this thread got rejected……I’m not rejecting the concept at all.

I 100% believe bacteria is a secret sauce to our reefs…..but the type and how we correctly produce is not fully understood….to me anyway. I know the common recommendation is carbon dosing but that has never worked for my system. I would get stn and rtn on my Tenuis every time I tried it. Also a slime would develop in my overflow drain and restrict it, causing my tank to overflow twice. The wife was pi55ed. More than usual

I wish that BRS can do an experiment on this and see if the different between dry rock and real live rock can make a different in sps keeping.

Did then do something similar a while back .

I wish I could credit the appropriate person who contributed this premise about WHEN your tank is ready for SPS. This has nothing to do with HOW you got there:

If you have a ton of (pineapple) sponge in the system then it is ready for SPS.

I believe I have seen exception(s) but anecdotal observations would largely agree.

Anyone agree/disagree?

Interesting take. My system just blew up with pineapple sponges over the last month with a redo of my fuge, and the sps polyps extension has been better than usual. I just said to my partner I think the tank is hitting its stride. Never really noticed this pineapple sponges thing before but it does mean something

The more animals that appear in the system, that are filter feeders, the better indication of water being suitable for sps. This, I take, as a great sign of system maturity and micro-biome support.

So here is something to contemplate as it relates to bacteria, nitrifying versus Probiotic. The application is quite different as is the ultimate desired goal. Are we missing the target by not understanding Holibient bacteria and competitive/ (-) bacteria? Could this help us to better understand why "ocean rock" is so valuable to acropora success of the past? What is dry rock, essentially? Is biomedia (÷) or (-) to our stony systems?
I will be adding a new video on my channel soon explaining a recent hunch, which explains much of Leonard's success as a keeper, cultivator, collector, and seller of some of Europe's finest acropora. After you watch his interview with Frag Garage, dating back to one of Adam's first interviews, Leonardo sort of answers this question, in his husbandry approach. He does not elaborate on the "why" too much, can't say that I blame him, as his concept may just be too advanced for most to get.
I 100% believe that the answer is competition, and I will dive deeply to bring the concept forward, but in a more easily digestible form, lol...

Understanding the micro-biome. This is the pursuit of understanding how carbon and bacteria dosing fit into this network. Network? Yes, a network or symphony of diversity, working symbiotically, each understanding purpose and role. Whether you have a vast system, with different bio-omes or biotopes are created, or whether you run super clean, no rock, no bio media, and rely on the holobient bacteria to drive the overall biome, giving little competition, all approaches at some point want to find a balance. Another words, with tons of space, we could mimic this with DSB, remote DSB, fuge zone, cryptic zone, with copious amounts of life, micro life, etc, therefore aiding in this advanced micro-biome. Or, perhaps we choose to take a more stripped down approach, running with less diversity, but less competition, allowing this holobient bacteria out compete nuisances. Adding a Probiotic type bacteria addition method, in this environment would be advantageous. That said, I tend to believe that all systems, regardless, are being stripped, with mechanical filtration, hindering this natural driving balance. Best systems I have ever run with acropora have no socks hindering the natural foods ever present in our systems.
