Will AquaClear ever produce a filter that is self priming because it is frustrating that you have to add water to it before turning it on especially during power outages. Why hasn't AquaClear done this yet?

They made a new version of the aquaclear

Odd mine start up when power is lost and restored, only when water gets low i have to reprime

I'm going to say no. The design hasn't changed in since the 1980's.

However, they are my preferred Hang On Back by a long shot, even including the SeaChem Tidals (which I also own). Although the Aquaclears don't self prime the first time you need to start them, they reliably restart after a power failure or similar, so no worries running one, in my opinion.

They are self-priming as long as there is some water remaining in the box. The only time I have to recharge is after a water change when all the water in the box is siphoned back into the tank as the tank level drops

You ever seen these?
No sir!

But as mentioned I've been rocking AC's since like 1984.

You're not messing with me here are you? I LOVE my AC's lol!

OK, wow! That seems like it has some advantages! I will definitely check these out because while I love and for now stand by the AC's, they are extremely overpriced, in my opinion. And I am not trying to start something here, but many times when someone says that a particular piece of reefing gear is "expensive" compared to the materials it's made out of, often someone will site "research and development" and the associated costs.

I'm here to say that the design of these AquaClear filters hasn't changed since the 1980's at least. It's nothing but a plastic box and a simple impeller. So I find it difficult to fork out the money they want for these AC filters these days. It would be great to have an alternative.

Thanks, Cichlid Dad!
