Will filter socks catch algae spores?

Doing a tank transfer and would like to use my current water. I have derbesia(sp) algae in my current tank and have already removed all of the live rock from it. I have new live rock ready for the new tank and was wondering if I filtered the water through a sock if it would catch any remaining spores?

Depends on the size of the spores and the micron size of the filter socks. If you had a small enough micron size filter, you theoretically could filter out the spores.

If ya could get your hands a uv. Sterlizer it would be the way to go...

I wanted to add an idea if I may...
layering a filtersock with poly filter inside, and doing so by layering in opposite directions with each layer should increase the matrix and decrease the amount of spores makeing it through.....

Then drop in a small uv before adding and you should do well....

pressurize filtering through the prefilters of an Ro unit works good also.

algae are not called pioneer species for nothing. sooner or later, it will find its way back into the tank.

a uv sterilizer is the best bet for algal spores

on the other hand think about your husbandry and what causes any algae outbreaks you have. Lower your N and add biological controls and algae will fear you, lol
