At the moment I have 2 clownfish, 1 sunset damsel in my 35 gallon tank and was looking to add 2 green chromis I know that would be my tank probably at max but would these fish work well together ? If not does anyone have any ideas for what could go well with my 2 clowns and sunset damsel?

Thanks Craig

Hi Craig and welcome to R2R!

I have Chromis with damsels and clown fish without any problems other than the damsels can be very territorial, and generally nasty

Hi Craig. My experiences have led me to believe that even if a certain type of fish is reportedly OK with another it very much depends on a number of things. For example. In which order they are added, how large the tank is, how many caves or hiding places you can provide, the size of each fish, and how often you feed. Even the way you acclimate them can play a role in the compatibility. And finally each fish has his own character, which is something we unfortunately cannot account for. I think the general consensus would be to go with the common knowledge and hope it works out. But be prepared to have to remove one if you need to.

Good luck and hope they all get along well.

I would say get three chromis... They'll school up, which should discourage the damsel. The clownfish probably won't give a dang, especially if they're bonded, and / or have an anemone to love on.

edit: for the record, "dang" is not what I typed. lol. Really?

The sunset is pretty mild mannered as are most damsel from the chrysiptera species.

I would not recommend 2 chromis or even 3 as they tend to pick each other off until only 1 is left.

They tend to do better in larger groups, 7+, in larger tanks with moderate to high flow.

In that size tank only get 1 chromis. Multiples have different requirements.

Some other options are a tailspot blenny, royal gramma, purple firefish.

Also a goby/pistol shrimp combo.
