alright so i just did a water change in my tank and when i got done i went to the basement to rinse my ro/mixing container i noticed a nasty slimy film in the container. never seen this before.. obviously pretty worried cause i just added 25gal of water to the tank from the container. i just started using a brand new 5 stage plus RO unit from brs. any thoughts.

How long did the water sit in the container before being added to your tank? Sometimes bacteria can start to build up if the water isnt 100 percent sterile. Also, depending on what salt mix you use, a film may be left behind by the binding agents.

Water was sitting for 2 or 3 days. I use reef crystals and never had this problem before

My best guess is there must have been some sort of nitrification happening inside the barrel. Did you test your water for the big three: ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates?

any light in the room? if I don't use the water right away, just the ambient lighting in the room leads to some 'slimy' build-up on the containers I use to store my ro/di and mixed salt- never consider it a big issue though

Whatever was growing in there was definitely organic and wont likely cause any harm to the display.

no i have not tested they have always been zero so i dont even have to kits to test anymore.

there is a small light so i can see down there but im using a brute can with the lid on it

I often have this issues with RC when freshly made salt water remains in the mixing container for more than a day (with 0 TDS RO/DI.) I have been told it's just undissolved minerals or precipitates and is common. It seems the longer the water stays in the mixing container, the greater the coating on the container, pump and heater.

I look at it this way - I'd rather have it remain in the salt water makeup container than in the tank :)

as opposed to all those non-organic growing things? :ooh:
lol

I have heard of this happening as well.

Honestly i dont think it is too much to worry about...but i would recommend using the water right away to avoid any buildup.

I have this slimey layer in my water change container (my water often sits while circulating for days before I use it). I have never had an issue, think of it this way, if algae is using up the nutrients of your water in the water change container, then less nutrients make it into your reef!

should be no issue, have fun!

just woke up and checked on the livestock, so far everything looks fine. thanks everyone who responded. i was freaking out.

I have this same issue after a few days with rc..... I now just try to change the water in less than 24hrs after making up but over 12hrs. Never had any issues just made me a little nervous.

Glad to hear it worked out. A little paranoia is good in this hobby. It may save you from a disaster down the road.
