Would a 40g long make a good diy sump?

I like the 48" length but a little concern the 13" depth might be too limiting for equipment. 16" would be more ideal and 18" would be perfect but the next standard size tank up with 18" depth is a 75. But now the height is too high at 21". This is a budget build so I'm just trying to find used tanks in the local ads.

16 “ is good . I like the figi series of sumps which I think are 15 “ .
13” would work if you don’t have a skimmer

Absolutely yes (but also dependant on what accessories you are placing in it)

As long as you can run a baffle height to achieve the proper water level height for your skimmer the 13" height shouldn't matter. Most skimmers don't run above 9-10" water height. I'd say 10" is your goal as you can always raise the skimmer. Your other option would be to run a recirculating skimmer. Then water height wouldn't matter.

Sorry, when I said depth I meant the width (front to back). So a 40 long is 48L x 13W x 16H.
