Went to Petco and found what appeared to be a pom pom xenia that didn't look so happy. After the purchase and a couple of days in the tank, he finally opened up, but looks a lot different than most xenia's I've seen (structure-wise). Am I losing my mind or do I need to give him a little longer to open up? Thanks!

Nice find, possibly a nepthea of some sort, very pretty.

That doesn't look like xenia. I think it may actually be a **nepthea (originally said kenya tree by accident lol).

Now that I'm looking at images, it definitely looks more like a kenya tree coral. I even asked them if this was a xenia since the DT had only one coral and the placecard said xenia (which i picked up for $20). Thanks!

They have some firmilarity, they grow like weeds and will take over your tank within a year.

Family: Nephtheidea Species: Capnella, ORA most likely since they usually (from what I have seen) supply PetCo with their capnella frags. PetCo often mislabels it as nepthea which is incorrect.
Nephthea is the same as litophyton (they recently combined the species--not sure why cause they have some serious differences but I'm not in charge (which is a good thing). )

So no, definitely not Xenia.

I've been trying to get a better pic for you - scrubbed some cyano from the frag plug and have been waiting for him to fully open up. It doesn't appear to have hairs on the individual arms. Sorry :/

Wow, that's huge! How long did it take to grow that big?
Oh I’ve thrown away so much of this thing, you have to watch out for the sheds! It likes to just randomly drop off a piece of itself and hope for the best...but to answer your question, maybe 10-11 months or so? got it as a 2” frag

Yup, some species of capnella literally grow like weeds.
