I have recentlyour purchased a yellow watchmen and he is quite small only about an inch long. I didn't see him for the first couple of days that I had him in my 55gal tank. Started to worry a little so I picked up some of my LR and he was hiding under one piece. I haven't seen him eat and he seems to not want to come out from hiding. I have two clowns in the tank as well.

Is this normal for the goby to just hide??

It's fine. Mine hide for 3-4 came out and ate after that.

Then he moved a mountain of sand around, put him in the sump and gave him away after that.

Get him a Randall's pistol shrimp (the small bright red and white one). Paired up with the shrimp, he'll have a better den and will be out more. That being said they can go for periods of hiding and its normal. I've had my pair nearly 7 years and they've been a great addition.

They will find each other.

Adding more fish to the tank will help too, as seeing other fish around helps fish feel safe.

I've read that the Tiger pistol is their natural partner. I added the Tiger months after the Yellow Watchman had been in the tank and they found each other almost immediately.
