So I have one strain of zoas looking really bad atm. The skirts are really small and their mouths became really big. On smaller polyps you only see their black mouths

I just wonder what the culprit my be.
The zoa strain is Rainbow Incinerator. They are personally one of my favourites in my tank so that hurts.

This happened only to these zoas. Every other frag in my tank looks fine.

There is something coming out of their mouths but looks like guts rather than waste.

Im attaching some picture.

Expelling zooxanthellae....they should be fine
I disagree with the latter part of that comment. Yes they're throwing up their zooxanthellae, aka spitting their guts, but that's never a good thing. In fact in all the times I've seen this over the years I've only had 1 polyp make it through.

Its indeed zooxanthellae and may be due to too much bright light intensity

and for me, I've had lots not die....thats what makes this hobby so great....some die, some don't.

So how do they look afterwards for you? As with all corals expelling zooxanthellae in large amounts is not a sign of a healthy animal and I would expect to see bleaching if the polyp lived.
I'm assuming your talking about the mesenterial filaments that are holding the zooxanthellae internally getting expelled through the mouth. The dark curly pig tail looking stuff. Just to make sure we're both on the same page.
I'd love to see some pics if you have any by chance? And if you have any methods to give them the success you're talking about would you mind sharing that too please? Ty
