My 40 Gallon is about a year and a half old and I’ve had two groups of zoas from the beginning. All zoas in my tank seem to spread nicely (as you can see it traveling up the rock in the picture), but they grow very tall. They don’t have that uniform tight look I like. What’s the issue? Incorrect PAR? Nutrients? They are towards the top of my tank. I have groups of Duncans and torches about 6-8 inches lower in the tank that do beautifully at the bottom of the tank, so I figured that not enough light wasn’t the answer for the zoas.

I believe when corals "stretch" like that they may be "stretching" for light, and in need of greater PAR.

@tbrown is very good with Zoas 🙂

Good luck!

Hey and welcome to R2R! When mine stretch like that it has always been lighting being too low for them. Not sure if they do that for any other reason.

They need more light. All my zoas get 250-300 PAR.
I’m not saying to blast them right away, but they can handle and love a lot light

As everyone else said - light. I mainly only have Strats and they seem to really like light. I do have a couple of TSA Zoas right next to them that prefer lower light and they stay pretty flush to the rock work. The Strats are happy and healthy but they're always reaching.
