That's incredible. I'm hoping to find a similar contact for my spawning project, it's becoming very difficult to source them at any sort of respectable budget. The amount of money that got me 12 in 2022 would get less than 5 these days.
Would love to hear more about your spawning project.

As I recall I did catch a YouTube video of someone actually causing a spawn somehow and she was a scientist/biologist. (Can’t remember the name tho )

I guess it wouldn’t be the most profitable viral to culture as they grow so slowly maybe. Surprised there isn’t more ppl that have accomplished this

Here's where I document it all. Lost almost all of them to BJD or some other pathogen, now I only have a couple of Indos left who snuck in amongst my first batch.

Oh man. How many did you loose to the pathogen?? That really sucks considering the cost on these things.

Thanks for that. I’ll give it a read

Silly question , but it kinda looks like you have some form of dinoflagellate on the sand bed. (But need a microscope to be sure)
I’ve noticed that when there is a minor flair up sometimes , my corals aren’t as happy. Possible issue?
Would be cool to know which species it is as some aren’t too nasty while other like ostreopsis are very toxic and add stress big time. I’m sure u are aware of this. Just a thought

9 in total were lost to the pathogen :( it was, of course, all of my most valuable and unique ones. I have three left, but I have zero intent to re-introduce them to my new broodstock this year when I get gravids for fear of contamination.

The dinos appeared after I had removed the corals from that system, and have now been replaced with a phytoplankton soup that I'm about to gut (again) and deep clean to remove Aiptasia contamination. I had an issue where my nutrients totally bottomed out for a bit, which seems to have been the trigger. I could be wrong though as this was all midsummer 2023.

Bottoming out nutrients seem to be a big thing nowadays. corals hate it as well, Dino’s love it
I find these corals seem to like a little pollution.
Just checked my tank an hour ago and had:
.35 ppm phosphate and 23ppm nitrate and that’s after a water change yesterday.
I have experimented and got the system down to .1ppm phosphate slowly and most corals seemed annoyed actually.
When phosphate starts to drop now, I add reedroids and it helps, and also the skimmer gets turned off

Fantastic specimens! The top one reminds me of an Indo I once had.
It’s very unique, the base ring is a glowing golden color. The purple one should have green stripes all around, but only showing half way around. Both I think need some time to adjust from shipping to fully open and color up

Here’s a bunch of night pictures I got of the golden one, it’s beautiful at night but it’s so reactive to lights…I turn on some whites to get pictures and you have about 1 minute before it’s closed up

I had a question for the Cynarina experts - mine has these three none protrusions that go right through the flesh. It doesn’t sell to be causing an issue…but I don’t think it’s normal. Any idea what I should do?

Also, my purple / green one from above has colored up nicely since it’s arrival

So beautiful!
The protrusions are skeleton that must have poked through some time during it's journey to the distributor. Since there's algae growing on them, it's unlikely to regrow over top, but I have snipped these (very carefully) in the past and the coral will seal up over them. I would say peroxide dip it, but I have not had good results with these animals in peroxide.

I noticed the algae and thought that maybe I should give the coral some shakes and annoy it so it retracts and then either try to clean the bone tips, or snip them back with diagonal cutters. These few tips seem longer than others and I don’t want them causing an issue or infection.

I’d personally let it be. It looks like it’s healthy. It will recover. As you probably know, these donut and meat corals grow slow. I’d be concerned that cutting it and exposing more of the skeleton might actually open up a can of worms and cause more issue than it’s worth.

Its gonna be an even more stunning coral in several months

Sounds good. I don’t see the protrusions in the seller photos, so it’s possible it’s not fully inflated yet and still stressed. Other corals that I saw this on - scoly and another Cynarina in the past - recovered from this in a few days so I started getting nervous I should take action.

I agree it looks healthy and it’s not causing a problem. I will give it more time to adjust and grow and it should get larger and not have these tips stick out anymore

It really is stunning in person, it always has this glowing gold ring around the perimeter. I suspect the inside is a golden yellow, the flesh is translucent, and when light gets inside you see the gold color through the flesh creating the illusion it’s Illuminating itself.

The sellers photo I think I found a bump from one left the longer skeletal pieces. It’s covered though. So, this should be capable of healing and inflating over them

These colors. Man. I can’t wait to see this come farther along.

I feed frozen mysis, pe mysis flake, and powder coral foods like benereef. Does Cynarina have a preferred food or something that is better suited for them?

Mine like anything 'stinky', so to speak. they're not too big on dry foods unless soaked in aminos, in which case they go into full anemone mode with massive fat tentacles. I primarily feed mine whatever seafood I have on hand, currently squid and salmon.
There are very few things they won't eat. I have had one drop krill, but that was likely because she had just eaten beforehand.
I definitely want to try the powdered coral foods! They seem like a really good option for fattening up my broodstock animals.

Reef roid- many consider the gold standard, but many, myself included, dislike it because it is a phosphate bomb and can cause tank issues

Benepets Benereef - I use this. It’s great. And it does not affect phosphates. It’s a cleaner powder food mix

Goniopower - I have gonipora, I add this to my mix, seems good

Brightwell Marine Blizzard S - I like this a lot also, good coral response, mixes clean

I take 1/4 teaspoon of all of these, except reef roids, and put in a cup with 2” of tank water. Then I add in a few pinches of pe mysis flake food. Yes they make flake food! It’s on Amazon. Then a squirt of either aminos or Restor. Mix well and let sit for 10 min. Mix again and slowly feed coral with baster. Torches, acans, scoly, Cynarina, dendro, and pretty much everything with a visual mouth seem to really like this combo.

Any one can be used stand alone also. But I like to take the mixture and pour it into a power head and broadcast feed the tank. Sometimes I target feed with a baster also.
