hey guys, recently i've gotten into salt water aquariums and currently have a 13 gallon AIO tank hosting mushroom corals, a damsel fish, and a few crabs aswell as my macro algae. everything used to look so good but after a while the flame macro started to go opake as well as growing some sort of...
Hey all, I am in the process of setting up a reef tank. It is a 135g with two fx4 canister filters. I understand the issues presented with canister filters, but I had them from a freshwater set up and wanted to use them. I understand a sump is preferred however I’m going to use these filters. My...
Just wanted to share my newest reef experiment! Last week I bought a mangrove sapling from my LFS which sparked the idea to make a very small pico tank housing the mangrove and maybe some macroalgae and or zoas/palys. I ran down to homegoods and found a roughly 3/4gallon cookie jar and threw in...
32oz deli cups full of Chaetomorpha Macroalgae stuffed into quart size ziplock bags with some clean 1.025 water for $10 per bag.
Local pickup / meetup is in the Bradenton area.
So I have been doing some research, as I am just getting into the saltwater/reef side of the aquarium hobby. And I’d really like to add some macro algae to my new reef tank build. It is a 135 gallon. I like the look of macros and of course all the benefits of them, so I’d like to put it in my...

Hey reef team, I've got a 25 gallon innovative marine AIO tank. I've been dealing with a bit of hair algae growing on my macro algae, as well as a ton of bubble algae growing on the rocks and frag plugs. I just tested my parameters and currently Alk is 7.5dkh, Ca is 750, Phosphates are 0.0 and...
A little story of the progress of my tank reboot.
I’m excited with how it's coming along so far, and who better to share with than fellow SW aquarium enthusiasts! :)
The Tech:
Aquatop Reclife ECO 40g AIO
Helio Smart Heater (1x 200W titanium single element) – was going to get the dual element...
I just finished cycling a 10g tank that I want to use for macroalgae only. I have chaetogrow, neophos, and neonitro. In addition to dosing those, do I need some kind of ammonia source so the beneficial bacteria don’t die or does that not matter….or is neonitro that ammonia/ nitrogen source for...
So I been fighting with high nutrient in my tank for couple months now. I’ve added 2oz Chaeto before but green hair algae killed it in my Refugium. But I’ve decided to try one more time with better light(tunze purple light) and 4oz of chaeto this time, it’s been about 2 weeks now and it’s...
Looking for an algae reactor for my 310g. Just the reactor don’t need a pump and all that.
Don’t want to spend $700 like I’ve seen a few out there.
Any recommendations? Probably $100-300 range?
Hello,
I am in the process of starting a 16 gallon macro algae lagoon aquarium with some invertebrates.
I was curious if RODI water was necessary for a macro algae tank like it is for a coral heavy aquarium.
I am not necessarily opposed to RODI but I live in a studio and there are not any...
Which one is more beneficial for a 310g tank with 6-8 large tangs and other reef safe fish+coral
Noticed when I added an 8" Unicorn tang my nitrates went from 5 to 25 within 3 days.
Currently only using a small amount of biopellets and tank has been running for 4.5 months.
If macro algae is...
introduction (10/28/23):
hey everyone :grinning-face-with-big-eyes: I wanted to share my progress on transferring my current 29g macroalgae tank to a newly empty 40 gallon breeder. I'm excited to do this because I feel like I will be able to keep so many more macros in the 40 than in the 29. The...

Picked up this hammer frag today. There is pink growths growing off side of hammer skeleton. At first thought maybe aptasia but I don’t see any tentacles or movement from them. Thought maybe some type of pink/red macro algae. Other possibility is branching coraline. This wld be best outcome...
Here is my 32 gallon seahorse tank! There are lots of kinds of macroalgaes in it, snails, hermit crabs, 2 lettuce nudibranchs, a blood fire shrimp, and 2 captive bred male seahorses (hippocampus erectus). There are also galaxy pods and live mysis shrimp in there. I add frozen mysis shrimp and...

Hi y’all, I have a A80 Tuna Blue sitting around and I’m looking into using it for macroalgae. I don’t think there should be an issue if I pump the whites all the way up, considering it’s going on a 7 gallon. Anyone have experience using this light for macroalgae? Thanks!
I've received so many different types of recommendations for algae sources! So, I wanted to put it to a poll to see what the community generally prefers when stocking their aquariums :)
Hi reef2reef!
I am starting a 32 gallon seahorse tank, and I plan on adding macroalgae instead of corals for that lush, planted look. I will be adding a pair of male seahorses (I wouldn't be able to take care of any babies!) My questions are:
1) When should I add the macroalgae? Before or...
