Good question, I would assume that new water would be better but it would be good to know what others think.

A mix of both I'd say. Aged water will have some bacteria and help jumpstart/skip the cycle.

I've never qt'd but as long as temp and salinity matches I think that's really all that matters.
Especially true for fish to match salinity of shipping bag/box/water and raise slowly.
Others will chime in.
If you are doing a water change anyway I can't see how adding that to the qt would hurt but, like I said, I've never qt'd.
My understanding of qt is that whatever comes in on coral/fish needs to remain/be treated outside of your display to avoid contamination of display and/or be treated outside of the display.
Therein I don't see why you couldn't use tank water or a mix of both.
Long answer my apologies.

Me too.
When I moved the 75 to the 100 I used 25 gallons of new water and the rest was tank water, scraping the bottom if you will. ;)

Same. Not saying it's right but I have never QTed anything. Also, Paul B doesn't QT. He says that QTing takes away your DT fish's ability to fight off disease when disease shows up, because it will show up. Naturally stronger immunities are better than chemicals in the tank, stressing fish to move them for treatment, etc.

Since this is a tank that is intended to be used for quarantine, wouldn't there be a risk of adding some bacteria by using water from the display tank?
