That's sweet! I'd like to start my own phyto culture but have NO clue where to begin.

With Phyto. Start with a single strain (no mixes from anywhere). Get some f/2 fertilizer and a grow light of some variety and bubble the Phyto with an airline, no air stone.

Pretty simple.

- Grow light (does NOT have to be anything crazy)
- Fertilizer (I use guillards f2 formula.)
- Bottle
- air pump w/ tubing
- SINGLE strain of phytoplankton.

sanatize your bottle, first. I used h2o2. I siwshed it around, dumped it out and then rinsed wirh RO water. Make fresh, clean saltwater and add to your bottle. Add phyto to the concentration that you want, then add your airpump. Add lights, and let sit until its dark!

Why do you say use a single strain? All I see for sale are multi strain bottles of phyto. I have no idea how to grow your own, I'm just asking out of curiosity. Also, where do you obtain your phyto to seed it with? If I have a bottle of mixed phyto, can I not just use a little of that to start a culture?

Also, did you drip acclimate them? If your parameters are different than the vendors, that can happen as well.

Yeah all parameters were the same. Oddly most of the corals effected were ones I've had for almost a year

Did your other corals you had prior also look bad? Was the water contaminated? Only reason that would happen is if something was in the water.

Everything looked fantastic until after the addition of the new corals. Some of them look a bit better today. Most of the euphyllia is still closed but show healthy tissue. Crazy

I'm sorry to hear this John, but for something to attack all the corals at the same time it has to be something that fell into the water or if it's a new salt could it be that that batch came bad? Because I don't think that by adding new corals, even if one came sick, it can't attack the entire tank in one day.

I believe after some back tracking and talking to some people with Cynarina, that i may have injured mine during the relocation process. They slime like crazy. I kid you not Luis, everything in there was absolutely covered in it. And what else is crazy, is my sps and acans that I already had look fantastic. They never went down at all. And the plate that came in the coral order is absolutely fine. That's why I think it was the coral slime. Only the corals that were covered in it were affected

Oh jeez John, I felt like I was punched in the gut reading this! So sorry, I’ve lost corals but I can’t imagine to that extent. I’ve seen posts from many people with beautiful tanks describing how they previously had total tank crashes. You’ll bounce back, you’re an excellent reefer.

Thanks Kevin. You've been so encouraging since the start of this. I'm going to fix what I can here and keep on moving. I spend a lot of time telling my boys they can't quit when something gets difficult. Gotta show em that I mean it.

And the plate that came in the coral order is absolutely fine. That's why I think it was the coral slime. Only the corals that were covered in it were affected

Do you have carbon to run brother? I'd do another 10% water change as well to remove some toxins if present. And yes, cynarina are slime monsters when bothered.

Did you already take them out? Maybe they just need some time to recover?

They're still in there Amanda. As long as I see healthy tissue,, I'm going to keep fighting for them

Good point. It may contain toxins and it irritated the other corals. Can you siphon the slime off the corals or blow it off and then siphon it out?
