Additional Aquarium Information

What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Patience
well I didn't;t want to and I know you guys are going to give me slack for it but I bought a Kenya. It was just so bright. I needed something glowing in the back corner. The Tube Anemone is still overpowering in fluorescence though. of course it was an awkward angle to reach in so I got a bit of glue streamer there.

I'm a Kenya tree fan. No complaints here. Expect to prune regularly though

This is what my dad had at 50 yo and my stepmother at 40 yo!

The triplets today with my daughter and stepmother and yes they are in the correct order.

So I had a bad tank day yesterday. I needed to clean the two gyres as they were barely working so I put in the back up pair and put the ones I removed in a bucket to be cleaned. Even though I didn't touch the programming, the clean pumps quickly decimated the tank. They knocked the birdsnest off its glue point on the rocks, they knocked over all of the frags in the sand and buried the favia. Instead of a relatively flat fore reef I had two sand dunes and a black acrylic desert between them. All of the fish were hiding and the water was so thick with sand particles that it was hard to see. I disconnected one of the pumps and changed the programming on the other so that it would settle down a little but I am beginning to really dislike gyre pumps. I love their flow pattern but their throughput is so inconsistent and they require maintenance so often that I'm ready to chuck them, except I can't, at least for now.

All of my frags are now behind the rocks partially protected by the Aqua Rocks that break up the flow and all of the fish have come out long enough to catch a quick bite to eat except the yellow wrasse but they went right back into hiding.

I'm pretending I don't own a tank for the rest of the day and tomorrow, sometime, I'm supposed to get my Meridian 35 so I will mount it, probably just completely remove one of the gyres and then dink around trying to get my tank back in rhythm and the corals in sane locations.

Oh no so sorry your having issues!

Thanks,

The yellow wrasse just came out to eat less than a minute ago and the good news is that everything survived, at least so far.

I think I'm going to try to get a pattern I like from just one gyre and pull the other one. Then I'll have another spare and I will just swap them once a month and let the removed one soak for a couple of days instead of just an hour or so. Maybe I can keep the flow more consistent that way.

That sounds like a good plan.

I feel your frustration reading this, so sorry Tom. In a few days it will back to its former glory and then you can laugh about it. 😟

I took the day off. cleaned the glass, filled the ATO, bought a new coral, acclimated, chased away a few crabs, and took a few picks. back was too sore from yesterdays episode of boat work. trying to plan 4 days of boat work coming up. mixing epoxy and painting with it each day. and it dries in like 20 minutes but 24 hours to cure. but hey, after the boat, I built everything on my bucket list.

Thanks. The day started off well, I replaced the filter pad and put in a new ChemiPure Elite (I never used their Elite before, only their Blue). I usually run a ChemiPure bag about once every 90 days to clarify the water a bit. I pulled a Feta Cheese container full of GHA from the Refugium and cleaned the two end panels of the tank. Then it was time for the pumps. I bought spare pumps recently so that I can soak the dirty ones longer and I went ahead and added the new pumps in place of the dirty ones. Chaos ensued...

Your tank looks stunning.

I forgot we also filled the ATO.

I'm waiting until we get a few days in a row below 100 so that I can order a few Pithos and Bumblebees.

GHA in the fuge....are you doing algae scrubber? every time I turn off my main pump to WC and turn it back on I get all this white flakey crud come out. I can only guess its sponges that are in the pump? I keep thinking to use a sock over the returns next time but alas, I still haven't. it snows for about an hour. hopefully your live stock is OK.

bumbles for vermatids? I bought a bunch a long time ago and are still thriving. I went to an LFS today and they had a giant pitho. I wasn't sure what it was at first. it had horns like a chameleon. I need to do another corals.com order. maybe I'll win 😁 I want a chalice and a torch. the Rastas I like but kind of pricey right now. plus I have a few other thing I need to buy yet that will be a big price tag.
