Additional Aquarium Information

What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Patience
I've also had a lot of this sponge impervious to eradication no matter how hard I tried.
And how are you keeping it at bay ? Doing what I’m doing taking the rock out and moving coral around or do you have a angel ?

I thought about a angel before . Is there one who would could live in a 75 gallon ?
Most sponges are toxic. There are only a few angels, I believe they are all large varieties, and some sea turtles that are immune.

Yes and is about a inch at the most .
I'm thinking that most sponges utilize less calcium than corals but more silica so inhibiting silica may slow it down. Have you had an ICP done and if so how was the silica levels?

Been a long time ago . Not sure I have any silica as I have a two cylinder system with the salt exchange on the house and I make water with eight canisters with two reverse osmosis cartridges and two of the cartridges are for filtering silicates .i know reading zero on a tester doesn’t mean that much but I believe I’m running zero .

Do you think I could get a angel small and give it up when he gets large . The smaller ones don’t eat sponge ?

Do you stir your sand? Grinding sand particles together can release some silicates.

Dwarf Flames are known to eat some sponges but not all of them do/will.

Silicates can also be released by the DI resin once it's spent.

You'd have to look into which species eat sponge but I believe someone mentioned the Regal Angelfish but even then your angel may not eat it or any Regal may not eat YOUR sponge.

I really like dwarf Flames but they can play havoc with your corals just as bad as a Coral Beauty or Bicolor. Luck of the draw on that as some are model citizens, others not so much.

Never.
Just let it do it's thing.

I had a coral beauty for about 8 years.
Mean sob-but never touched any coral.
He would pick at the sponges, but I can't say for certain he ate any.
I did notice while using reef crystals, the sponge took off. Don't know if there was anything more it liked in the salt or what, just an observation.
Mine also only grows on certain types of rock, mostly on/in my oldest rock, which is 25 years old or more. I've added a few pieces of dry rock, rock from just off the shelf over the years and it's not on those.
As far as I know, and this is from all my years although I'm not quite as with it today as I was, all the larger angels will eat sponges.
Like Tim said, maybe not yours.
But, all of these angels can destroy a home reef in a matter of days.
Or they may not.
The Rock Beauty, one of the most beautiful yet most impossible to keep feeds directly on sponges and almost nothing else.
I have not the experience or expertise to comment on which sponges any angels prefer over others.
I've had many large angels throughout the years.
I love them and would keep them all if I had the chance, or had a larger tank.
If interested in an angel for a 75g, something like the African Flameback is a Pygmy and a fun little guy, mean as all get out or a half black, which are very docile with a great personality and also are great rock pickers, great for an established tank.
Just remember all angels, no matter what size, will use 100% of your tank and most if not all are moderately aggressive and cannot tolerate another angel or things their same shape.

I change them out regularly. Been thought this with the guys at Aquafx .thats why I ended with another extra cylinder for silicates . When the first gets used i Change it out and move the second one to the first spot and then replace the original first and put it where the second one was . Silicates if I have any wouldn’t be able get by the the filters this way .

Trust me I’m full aware of certain fish or invertebrates that will eat certain things while other wont ! Long time ago “at least 10 , 20, 30 , ish years “ did that with aptasia going tru File fish , shrimps , etc .

Do you think the Pygmy angel would do a bad job of eating the coral ? . Are we about stick coral or all corals ? .

I saw this in a recent post . Is there anything meditational wise that I could introduce to remove ? .

I've had one Pygmy, an African flame back years ago.
Constantly picking, ate everything, very territorial and would literally take on anything 10 times it's weight and size 🙃.
It was fun to watch.
I had no coral so I can't speak about that but those rocks were mighty clean.
It was a very personable fish.
I would, if interested in a smaller angel, just do a lot of research before going that route.
I've had a coral beauty, elebie, half black, flame, keyhole and lemon peel as far as the smaller angels.
I might have had some others but those are the ones I remember most.

Purple Masked is one that came up in a Google search. Rare though, it sounds like.
