What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Patience
I guess you could say what I do is a quick acclimation. I float to get the temp up then I pour a little water in to equal roughly 1/3 of the bag then wait a few minutes and repeat two more times then into the tank they go.
I do same. I heard shipped fish build ammonia quicker when you open the bag so drip takes too long. I drip with sensitive stuff like seastars.

It feels like it’s been a long emotional day for me.
Receiving corals is always exciting and I never sleep the night before but it is also a little stressful and today I had a little anger flare up at my sons because they weren’t being safe cutting down trees and dropped one on a power line and I lost power for about 5 minutes.
I went running out yelling into the woods because I thought one of them might have gotten injured and was ticked that the power went out.
I screamed and yelled at them and demanded an answer to what happened. They both looked concerned and wouldn’t talk just looked at the ground then my oldest said lack of communication and then his brother agreed with him and then they promised to pay better attention.
I nearly had a heart attack from anger.
I ended up sitting in front of my reef and started on my breathing exercises that I learned to calm me down.
I apologized to my boys and explained why I was so angry and that my yelling wasn’t necessary and that I was sorry for screaming at them.
I made them take a break and go get us Tacos and had a really good old time Vietnam veteran that lives down the road from me come over and help me explain the importance of safety and how to be effective communicators when using a chainsaw and skid steer.
My friend was in the tree industry most of his life and he understands my difficulties with impulse control and anger and always had wise words of advice for me.
But here is a video I took this evening of today’s shipment under the blues.
I’m finally starting to feel sleepy.

Those are awesome looking corals! Hopefully the rest of the week will be less stressful for you.

Yup. That's why it's always important to check the salinity of the bag!!!
You wouldn’t believe how high the ammonia was in this from overnight ship. You could see her shed skin.

Yeah. I bet it was high.

What happens is, the bag is filled with water, the livestock and O2. Over the course of shipping, the O2 levels drop, and CO2 levels increase, which decreases pH. The pH gets low enough to the point that ammonia is not toxic to the livestock. Once you open the bag, the CO2 escapes, and O2 levels increase, the pH increases, causing the ammonia to become instantly toxic.

Kind of amazing how this works, especially how it works in our favor. Science is amazing.

Oh jeez Jim, I wish you weren’t going through this!

I don't drip acclimate either... :astonished-face:
I've had drip acclimated fish roll over and die almost immediately (in one case immediately). I've had better luck just temp acclimating livestock and putting them in.

When I was acclimating my Royal gramma, he'd look dead. Freaked me out every time.

I worked for 15 years as a timber faller. People often don't understand how dangerous it can be and wonder why you're so particular. I understand how that event would cause you to be concerned and quite emotional. Timber work needs solid situational awareness and being continually alert. I'm glad no one was hurt. This is intended to sound supportive, although I'm not sure if I'm saying it quite right.

I acclimate fish and inverts thats it. Corals I don't acclimate. Usually I do quick acclimation for fish, just to get the salinity up.

I have a really nice SW PetCo, so I've gotten 2 of my fish from there, and my most recent trip, the salinity in the bag was 1.015 :grimacing-face:. I had to do a long acclimation for the fish because an increase of .01 salinity is way out of my comfort zone to just plop a fish in.
Love my Petco!
I bring my hydrometer with me IF I ever want to buy one.
Lie I have one in my glove compartment....

My PetCo is pretty nice. I've not seen one sick/diseased fish everything I've been there. I've gotten my clown, which has been super healthy from day 1, as well as my exquisite wrasse, which I can't say came healthy, but it came disease free!

I hope the rest of the week goes better Jim!
We've all been there I'm sure and I'm sure the boys knew you were yelling out of concern and love.
That's what family is for.
And you are part of this family now and we are here for you whenever.

Everything I have is from my local Petco.

I don’t have a Petco in my town.
