So reefers, what plans do you have for the tank or tanks this week?

I plan to order some corals this week. Get some torches, zoas, rock flower nems

So I'm thinking that will be my third coral after the frogspawn and Duncans that I plan to get next month. They have it cut to order so no rush. Do you think I could glue it up under the shelf that's on top of the tower or will it need to be further from the lights?

They do require some light. I keep my Cyphastreas in medium/medium low lighting.

Well i turned off my skimmer yesterday, here's hoping it makes abdifference. I fed 2 cubes of food last night too for good measure... I blew off my rocks and a lot came off and had some GHA growing under the mats.

When you blow off your rocks, are you siphoning it out into a filter sock in your sump to catch all the yuckies?

Planning a fairly light tank week myself. I need to finish cutting in the new UV unit, I still need to recut the hoses so that it all fits correctly; mount a few of my frags, the favia is drooping off of its plug it has grown so much and the Bubblegum digi and acropora are looking for something solid to attach to beyond their plugs; the biggest one is I should be getting some Berghia tomorrow to take care of the aiptasia. I've stopped killing the aiptasia to give the Berghia something to eat and they have not disappointed in their ability to procreate.

@tharbin I'd wondered about this. I'm just getting into sps, so mine are still small. But I've often wondered how they would support their own structure with just one point of contact. Do you have a solution in mind for this. My sps in question are montipora digitata as well

They will even grow up in to shaded areas.

They will encrust off the plug and that's there strong hold. Once they have a "foothold" on a rock, they are good to go! If its a larger piece, you can make an adhesive "sandwich"... superglue gel/epoxy/superglue gel

@kingranch2003 the corals will take care of it for you. You just need to mount them to the rock in an appropriate place. It's best to either do it right away or wait until you see the base starting to encrust out on the plug. The advantage to right away is that it is easier to mount them before they start to spread, the downside is that they may be harder to acclimate if you don't have experience with that type of coral (getting it in a spot it likes).

Once they start to encrust their plug they are actively attaching themselves to the surface. How that happens depends a lot on the type of coral. For instance a birdnest will typically start some downward branches that eventually fuse to the rock while a digitata will typically just get wider and wider at the base encrusting the rock. I let my Bubblegum digi go a bit too long on its plug so I'm just going to cut the post off of the plug and mount it to a rock. I prefer to remove the plugs or remount them to a larger plug/tile early on but I've been negligent lately.

Here is a shot of the Bubblegum right after I moved it back to the DT from the hospital tank on Dec 30th 2024, notice that while it is firmly mounted it hasn't really started to encrust the plug very much. This would have been the ideal time to mount it but the DT wasn't really in good condition.

Here is the same coral a day or two ago. Breaking it off of the plug now is possible but I don't want to stunt its encrusting so I will instead cut the post off and mount the digi and the plug base onto a rock.

I forgot to add. I typically just use gel CA unless I can't get a good surface match, then I will use the CA/Epoxy/CA sandwich like @Rocks reef mentioned.
