My homes tankless water heater has been acting up. Today I pull the front panel and am shocked to find rust everywhere.

Looks as if it’s coming from the exhaust vent. Not sure if the water came from rain or condensation, but it was raining tonight and I didn’t see any drips happening

Any ideas?

If it is a water heater there should be no condensation because in any case it would occur in the opposite case, that it was a chiller and the contact of the heat with the cold pipes would cause condensation. I am more inclined to this photo where there seem to be traces of water liquifying in the exhaust from the ceiling perhaps.

That is an nearly straight run to the roof vent

And I read that the hot air venting out this exhaust can cause condensation so I wondered if during certain temps/conditions it could be condensation dripping into the unit.

Of course…last night it’s raining, and I turn the unit on, open it up, and no leaking/dripping anywhere! Obviously something is causing this. From the top. But I couldn’t get it to happen In front of me.

On this week’s episode of grilling with Kev I just wanted to post an update. Oh crap, the Mrs will be home in an hour, I thought it would be late afternoon or early evening. I just took the toga off and am going to do a quick wash cycle and hopefully have it dry and back on the bed before she gets home. I need to get the keg in the trunk of my car and clean up the pile of dirty dishes in the sink and pick up all the pizza boxes scattered on the floors and counters. If you don’t hear from me again know that I didn’t get it all achieved in time! They’ll never find my body because she’s Italian.

Picked up a couple 40 gallon food safe containers for $10 each! Perfect for my saltwater mixing station.

Ah we’ve dealt with a very similar situation on a new construction house mechanical contractor wound up adding a weather head ontop of the pipe exhausting for the roof also insulated the pipe in the attic since it was a unconditioned space causing it to condensate

Had a regular hot water heater here and then a handyman swapped out for the tankless. He added that flex pipe from the unit to the existing pipe run through the ceiling. Seemed ok. But I see now more was needed. Thank you for the advice!

I’m my jurisdiction flex pipe will not meet code and every tankless unit I’ve installed has very specific specifications for venting considering the total length/height of the run might be something to look into also
