Well, yes and no? Feather dusters feed on smaller particulates but yes, that means you've got particulates in the water. Broadcast feeding works for NPS usually if you're running dirty enough water to begin with.

I'd say get a cheap one and try it out!

If you feel successful, you're not doing it right , or you haven't been doing it long enough. Every reefer has times they feel like they are failing or 'if I just had this piece of gear', etc.

I can assure you that adding a sump won't fix anything. A reef tank is deceptively simple. All it needs is some substrate or rock for biological filtration, saltwater, light, and flow. Most of the gear we add is to handle higher bio-loads, or provide clearer water, or make our life easier but they aren't magic. In many ways they make it harder to succeed because you have more 'things' that can cause problems or worse hide problems.

I've been doing this for almost 50 years and I make mistakes all of the time, and I fail, a lot, I lose corals and I buy junk I don't need but I know I'm a pretty good reefer.

Hang in there from what I've seen of your tank you are doing very well. Don't forget that many of the tanks you see on here spend more money in a week on their tank than you spend in a year. How many tanks quietly replace dead corals or keep adding corals 15 or 20 at a time. We cannot all afford that, I know I can't.

You totally beat me to it John.

There is nothing wrong with HOB or external (cannister) filtration. The main thing the sump gives you is lots of places to put stuff you probably don't need.

Take a look at Paul B.'s tank.

It uses an undergravel filter, no sump, no AIO, not even HOB.

I ran tanks for many years on just an undergravel. I didn't get my first, and only, sump until I had been reefing for 30 years. My tanks were just fine with HOB. Now I run AIOs and put too much junk on my tank.

There are some benefits to not having a sump, less chance of catastrophic water loss, less complication, and fewer places to put junk you don't need or even worse doesn't work. We all do it. The less places you have to put junk the less junk you will have.

How often do you feed? Have you seen growth? It seems pretty cool!

Directly only 2 or 3 times per week. They get food dropped on them when I feed the fish anyways. It's fun to drop a ball of white worms on them and watch them crawling into the heads and getting eaten up. The skeleton will only get so big so you judge health by the extension. It should be flared out like that. New heads will grow as the colony expands. Look at the bottom left of the pics. You'll see the newest heads forming there.

Alright putting this baby to bed overnight in the fridge. Getting up early to get it in the smoker. I’m thinking 12 hours of smoking for this 9 pound pork roast, does that sound about right Tim? Putting apple cider where the water goes and I’ll be spritzing it with apple cider vinegar mixed with the rub every hour.

I just run the smoker at 225°-250°, plop the shoulder in, and watch the temperature. I don't touch the pork until the internal temperature hits 160°. At that time I cover the roast with foil and continue smoking until it hits right about 195° making sure to pull the roast out prior to 205°.

Keep it wrapped in tinfoil, drop it in a cooler wrapped in a towel for another 30-45 minutes and the. Remove from the cooler and pull it.

Mine usually take between 8 and 10 hours.

I wouldn't spritz it throughout though. Cook until 160°, then add a tablespoon or 2 of the Apple Cider vinegar to the tray before covering with tinfoil.

Im conflicted. I like feeding corals, but i've also specifically avoided corals that supposedly require feedings because, if its a requirement, im less likely to do it lol
