Additional Aquarium Information

What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Patience
They rarely are pretty. This is one place where function trumps all else.
Here you go its kind of dark... In the first chamber I have the heater, the UV sterilizer and the annoying skimmer, 2nd chamber is a bunch of live rock, 3rd is just the return pump.

Reminds me of my display tank except my anemones are browner.
Some of those Aiptasia are actually kinda pretty as they grow up.

Another thing I've been wondering what's the point of pointing frozen food in one of those feeders that float around the tank as it melts? Why not just toss in the frozen food and let the current carry it around as it melts which is what I do.

Then I think mine isn't made right. I bought it and the tank together and it's a DIY sump and all the water levels are the same in each section... I do have a bunch of rock in the middle section could that somehow be causing the issue?
They can all be the same height but usually they're not. The baffle heights usually are staggered. The middle and first chamber can be the same height but the last chamber usually has less water in it.

If the middle chamber has too much water and you run a skimmer, you'll have to raise the skimmer. My sump is technically a 4 chamber with 2 weirs. First chamber is a bubble tower/trap, second chamber and 3 chamber are separated by an arch instead of a baffle, third and fourth chamber have the baffle that controls the second and third chamber water depth.

Either works but the fast eaters will grab the block and tear it to pieces and gorge themselves if the block is tossed in. The floating or hanging frozen cube feeders disperse the food to the tank better because they have constant flow which allows for a better broadcast usually.

I've done both ways though.

That makes sense! Thank you for explaining.

I had to build a stand for my skimmer

Hey Smorg!
Let's show @kingranch2003 over in the POTM voting thread. He entered the one and only.... Sweet Lips in the contest. #14 is the one... I would appreciate the support from the family and I know he would as well.
Many thanks my friend. That's very kind of you sir

I did a little. I don't have any pictures on my phone though.

I made a little rock scape in the center er section of my sump and then added 6 Anemones that have since become probably close to 30 Anemones. I added a Mocha and a Black Ocellaris Clownfish pair to the sump and they happily swim through the Anemones very rarely wandering more than an inch or 2 away from any Anemone. Sometimes all I see is a little black or a little orange snout poking out looking at me.
Yours is THE example in my opinion. Id never even thought of a display sump before I saw yours!

I know it'll be hard to see, but Im going to do a "display behind the AIO wall"! You won't be able to see it, but it'll be there.

Amanda, are the baffles adjustable at all?
Also, I posted in your thread to "follow this"... meaning Randy's advice. 🤣

One more question, where did you get your Rock Flower Anemones? I know you told be before, but I didn't write it down and I have slept since then... Or, if anyone else has bought some, let me know.

It isn't absolutely necessary but most sumps are designed to have less depth in each chamber as it goes from the inflow to the return. The inflow chamber is normally the highest and contains the primary mechanical filtration (socks, floss, rollers, etc.) the extra height reduces bubbling and noise. You usually want an odd number of chambers as you want the baffles to work in reversing fashion (usually under the first baffle, over the second, under the third, over the fourth, etc.) and it is best if the return chamber is feed by an over section, thus an odd number of chambers. If we choose a three chamber sump, it would normally go under the first baffle to the center section which is typically the skimmer and other paraphernalia. You usually want that chamber to have a fairly constant depth for the skimmer. Then it normally flows over a baffle into the return chamber. The height of that baffle determines the depth of the second chamber which keeps it fairly constant. The last chamber is the return which I prefer to have as small as possible relative to the return pump as I prefer frequent small ATO fills to large infrequent ATO fills.

My AIO is a five chamber so it goes through my primary mechanical media and heater (chamber 1) under the first baffle into the second chamber that contains my skimmer and uv, then over the second baffle (which in my sump is adjustable), into the third chamber which contains my refugium, then under the third baffle into the fourth chamber which is where my rear temp sensor and ATO fill is, then over the fourth (which is also adjustable) into the return section where the ATO sensor is also located.
Tom do you ever see temp fluctuations with the temp sensor in your ato chamber? I really wanted to put mine there, but I was afraid the cooler ato water would throw off the temps. Just curious about your experience, friend.

No they are silicone in place, I seen your post, I got the rock flowers on ebay I will post the link. They were sold as ultra but I wouldn't consider them as ultras. I have also bought them from corals.com and theres were amazing but I lost them when my pico crashed.

With flow going through there, it shouldn't depending on how much your ATO is dumping in there at a time.

Man something weird is going on in my tank! My scooter blenny disappeared a few days ago, and I haven't seen my pink streak wrasse or cleaner goby today!
That is not good my friend!
