Hello,
I am new to reefing and just started a reef tank last week. I don't have an LFS or aquarium club locally so Reef2Reef has really been a fantastic resource. I put in ~10-12 lbs of KP aquatics starter live rock on Wednesday (shipped in wet paper). I chose the starter rock to minimize die off given wet paper shipping, and so far haven't had any that I can tell. It looks great to me! Hitchhikers I have found include a small starfish (only seen once), pencil urchin, many snails, a spaghetti worm and what I think is a sea squirt.
After getting the live rock, I read an article about cycling a new tank with some hardy coral frags and went to Coral Fest frag show/swap in Dallas this weekend and picked up some frags. My kiddos were with me so we may have put a couple more in the tank than I planned! I spoke with Justin (I think) from North American Coral Labs who was very helpful, and got some beautiful frags at a great price. Here is a quick overview of the tank and plans:
IM Nuvo 15 tank
Smart Farm 60 Watt light (noopsyche knock off)
hygger miniwavemaker
50 watt heater
~10-12 lbs KP aquatics starter live rock
No skimmer
Using filter basket with some floss for now
Planned equipment:
caddy for better filtration: floss/bio/etc
Livestock:
2 zoa frags, 1 bubblegum monti, 1 LPS (I think its an Acan, my youngest insisted on getting!)
No fish yet
Potential plans:
1 Firefish
goby/shrimp combo
ocellaris clown
euphyllia corals/zoa garden
Questions:
I was planning on running minimal lights before I add fish/coral, and didn't think about what I would do now that I am cycling with coral. Any advice or thoughts?
Also, the sea squirt came covered in algae and doesn't look great, though I don't know what a healthy one really looks like. Should I keep it or possibly try to feed it something like reef rods?
Thanks for reading! all advice or thoughts appreciated
