180G: Four Tangs

Which of the four would you say is the most aggressive? Achilles Tangs are quite expensive, but like that they seem to be smaller than Naso's.

The achilles tang is the last fish you'll add - very aggressive fish and also an ich magnet! Mine had ich and went away on its own. Naso tangs are peaceful and yes, they can grow fast! I have 2 other big naso tangs in my 450gal - very cool fish. Every tank should have one IMO. You can check out some of the tangs (and angels) on my build thread.

I may have to avoid an achilles tang for those two reasons. Lol. I don't have any experience with Naso tangs, do they too big for a 180G? Honestly, I don't want to buy a fish then have to re-home after a couple years. I plan on adding two Swallowtail Angels (male and female) as well.

If it were my 180gal, I'll safely stock the following tangs:
Yellow
Purple
Koi (my fav)
Gem
Bristletooth (?)

If I'm feeling lucky
[Blonde] Naso (grow big & fast)
Achilles (aggressive & ich magnet)
Hippo/Regal (grow fast)
Sohal (can be a bully & grow fast)
Sailfin (grow fast)

Avoid all powder blue & brown! :)

My Achilles came today!!! Wrapped up my tang gang with a gem, blonde naso, yellow, hippo, white tail, and Achilles.

Congrats! Keep an eye on ich. My was clean for 2+ years and had ich 2-3 weeks ago but gone away on its own.

Also, you’re missing a Koi tang, my friend. I got one from Harry’s as you know. This one I’m still observing and will likely stay in the frag tank since I’m overstock in the big tank.

Your tang list looks fine to me, however, personally I would not get a naso, just get too big for a 180, imo. Chocolates are one of my favorites. Here is my chocolate, get a juvenile because the transition to adult is amazing.

I don't think naso get too big for a 180g . I've had mine for over 8 years and she was in a 180 for 7 of those years. She is fat and healthy but not too big for a 180g IMO. IME they don't get as big as many people say they do. Mine is relaxed and just cruises around the tank. None of my 8 tangs pace the tank from end to end like I see some do. If they did I would probably feel I need a larger tank.
Maybe I'm lucky or mine are less stressed than some :thinking-face: I'm a believer that hungry fish get stressed and aggressive because they stay in survival mode. Mine get fed heavily twice a day with a frozen mix heavy on PE mysis with 4 types of pellets mixed in. I also toss pellets in throughout the day as treats so maybe mine are relaxed because they know they're not going to have to fight for food. Mine don't even get aggressive when I feed.

I am going to be a starting newish build (transferring fish and corals from older tank) to a new 180G - six feet long and three feet wide tank. I currently have a 120G that houses two tangs - Yellow and a Convict. I would like to add two additional tangs once the 180G is up and running - Naso and Chocolate. I love the dimensions of upcoming build with great length and width. I’m looking for some advice or recommendations from those of you with experience keeping multiple tangs together. Appreciate any insights!

Should be fine, nasos get large but are really peaceful! Seems like you have a good variety of tangs too

I’ve had 8, in a 240. Tangs are weird because most never find the limit of how many they can add to a tank, as long as the tank is 6’ long. I’ve seen plenty of people with 180’s, with around 20 tangs. My recommendation is to make a full list of all the ones u want, figure out aggression levels, and add in bunches from peaceful-aggressive

I think this is very doable with minor problem only. You are right that the Yellow will likely be a minor problem. If you can, I would recommended hold off adding the yellow until you have the other three tangs in (like in the sump or side tank).
If this is not possible, prepare to have a large mirror, like 24+X18 inches to put on the front of the tank. This should distract the yellow enough to keep him from giving the new tangs too hard of a problem. Make sure you feed well, all he can eat. Two feeding station for Nori is very helpful in getting all the smaller tangs plenty of food.
Great size tank. Same foot print as mine but mine is 30 inches high.

I have 6 tangs in my 72X36X30. I was mistaken in my last post. Mine is 72 inches long instead of 60.

They are doing great together, no problem.
