Hi,

I am new to reefing and just got my first anemone. It is a beautiful specimen from Liveaquaria. They describe it as a "long tentacle anemone". According to the sticky thread in this forum, it should attach itself to the base of my rock work at the intersection of the rock and the sand. However, it seems to be floating and moving in the current. My flow is not super strong (I have a FLO of 5.0 on my Apex Waves). The anemone is not tumbling a lot. In fact, 80% of the time it is stable and upright in a low flow corner of the tank. Occasionally, the current will upend it, but then it gets back to the upright position.

My questions are "is this normal?" and "how long will it take for it to attach itself?".

TIA!

FL_Reefer, it is so "weightless" in the water I don't see how I can anchor it.

Ya I know what you mean. It will attach itself after awhile. Maybe turn your powerheads off for alittle bit to let it settle. I dug a hole in the sand, put the nem in it and kind of built a burm around mine till it attached. You may have to do it a few times.

I had a nice bta and expanded really well right away. It moved a few times and found a place it liked. So I thought, it ended crawling into the rock work, I figured if it went in, it could come out. Not so much it died . So if you see yours going into the rocks, grab it!

Agreed with the last two posts, turn off all of your flow to give a fighting chance to attach itself.

yeah it's going to want NO FLOW for at least 30 minutes while it anchors itself.

OK, It's been a week and it's still not attached. I've gone through a few 12 hour periods of no flow and many more of of low flow (where it sit in one spot). I worried that prolonged periods of no/low flow will cause other problems. From what I can see, the tissue on the anemone looks very health. I examined the foot and there are no tears or other signs of damage. The tentacles look fine too. I tried nestling it next to a small piece of rock, burying most of it in the sand bed and, most of the time, just leaving it alone. Any other ideas?

Keep it where it is and if possible keep flow down. Surround it with some rock so it blocks the flow.

@MikeyAl , Here is a picture of my attempt at your suggestion. Also note that my two Kauden Cardinalfish seems to be very attracted to the anemone!! They don't quite touch the tentacles, but they hover within a quarter of an inch!!
