I'm going to try to have both shrimp and fish - hoping the rock crevices and heavy planting will provide enough cover for the cherry and amano shrimp, which are already in the tank. Or, at least they were added to the tank (no fish yet) - I saw them the first day, then from the next morning on, nothing. Where did they go? No carcasses and no shrimp...
I agree you can have both, just influences your choices on which fish. I know it's typical but I've half considered putting a high end beta in here but again they will go after the shrimp. Also I think shrimp only tanks tend have the shrimp out and about more and doing less hiding. When there are no predators present they tend to be in the open more. There are some fish that are perfectly safe for shrimp and that's another option. Just have to decide which way I want to go.

So the last updated shot was from Thursday morning. The erectus plant is very impressive. This is this morning, it's about 2" of growth in two days. Yesterday was a week since planting and it has double in size. The monte carlo as too, and the ludwiga is finally starting to take off. All the plants seem to be loving life except my dwarf hair grass. Maybe it's just taking longer to show signs, at least that's my hope.

Filling in nicely and I'm digging the look!

Wow, great vibrant growth!

Ok, so I knew I had some snail hitchhikers and I assumed they were the normal trumpet snail. However I have discovered they are not, any idea what these little guys might be?

I think they just call them rams horn snails. They eat some of my chain sward tips and I just don't really like to see them. I think low pH (under 7) keeps them from being able to calcify their shell. Fact check me on it.

Trumpets are fine with me. I added a bunch to my tank to keep my soil churned up a little. I don't see them much in my system and haven't seen damage I could pin on them. I have a couple Madagascar lace plants that seem like they would be showing it if snails had been eating them.

I keep 2 assassin snails in my 2 gallon that has rams horns. They kill them slowly. Keep them out of plague proportions. They took out what looked like all the snails in one of the tanks after 6 months. I had an outdoor 30 gallon tank for over a year and they (the two of them) were never able to get all the snails.

You may want to put a Pea Puffer or some more aggressive snail carnivore in there while you are getting stabilized. Trade it in later. I think a Loach might cause havoc on newly rooting plants but someone else might know better than me there. I had some of those in my shrimp tank that did just disappear on their own, so who know for sure.

I love having my shrimp. I Had Amano's breed and almost got some hatch out. Bad vacation timing. I havent had much luck with the Crystal's. I like them more, but I think they need more love than I have to give. My Cherry shrimp live pretty much anywhere and are cool to watch. I got them from a guy on craigslist about 3 years ago. I got some dark blue ones and bright red. Put them in the same tank. Now I have a couple purple almost black ones, lots of tan to clear, some solid red. When I had seahorses it was easy to trap the less attractive shrimp and feed them off. Now that I dont have anything that eats them, it bothers me to catch them because I am not comfortable killing them just for the sake of it.

I had two pair of rams in my 120. I have always loved the look of them. When they paired off they got really aggressive. They seemed to need about 4 Sqft to feel good about things. They tore out small sections of my ground cover to spawn. They laid eggs twice and ate them on day 3. I put them in my 7 gallon shrimp tank and they let the fry hatch. I had enough daphnia and some pods in there that the fry fed off of that. I didn't put much focus on raising out the fry. Many died and I ended up with just one that was about the size of a dime. Cant remember if I sold him or what. The rams ate my shrimp when they could catch them. I eventually traded them in because they were just too aggressive. Maybe just dont get a male and female?

I mentioned earlier that my discus would slaughter my shrimp when they could catch them so the shrimp went into hiding. Now that I have only cardinal tetras the shrimp are coming back. The tetras do go trolling for small shrimp, but definitely not taking all of them out.

I have had freshwater fish since I was 12 and had opportunities to keep almost everything I have wanted. I use them more as decorations now. I really like small schooling fish. If you are into freshwater fish I would say to go for that. Amano's get big enough that I have been able to keep them with other fish. Feeder shrimp seem to hold their own. If you are way into cichlids then probably no shrimp. They might be able to eradicate a shrimp (and snail) population.

I did slowly shut off my co2 over the past 2 weeks. I also changed the lights. (my Kessils were ready to go on the new reef build.) The current ones are made by Orphek. I feel like they are really not good light and I would not recommend them. I also placed reptile heat strips under the entire bottom of my 120 plant tank and that is now the only heat source.

Between the three of those changes my glossostigma stopped growing upward and started to send out runners that are rooting down. They are filling in quickly as ground cover and I am pretty happy about it. Now I wonder if I could have dont that with my H. Cuba. I need to get in there and cut out the remaining plants that are growing upward but I think I might be getting what I wanted.

I have a canister filter on the system, but I am not good about maintenance on it. I am considering pulling it off and just going with circulation or a hang on the back.

Little update on the tank, some plants are taking off and some aren't. My hair grass is not showing any signs off growth yet, but the pennywort, monte carlo, and a few others are. The bottom of my tank is fairly shadowed with the heavy vegetation at the top. At some point I may have to except that there wont be the carpet I wanted with out pulling some of the bigger plants. If i get forced to choose I'll drop the idea of a carpet plant. I like the look of this tank. Water is still hazy, I'm changing socks every few days and they are still coming out brown as mud. So it may just take some time to get all the silt out of the water from the substrate. Either way I'm happy with the progress and It wont be much longer till have some aquatic life in the tank.

I'm having a tough choice between concentrating on shrimp or going with a fish dominated system. If I want shrimp I will have to choose fish accordingly, if I don't then it opens my options some. If I go no shrimp, there will probably be a ram of some kind, but if I go shrimp that won't be an option. If I go shrimp, then I will have to start researching more on shrimp safe nano fish. I kind of want to go a little unusual and maybe more exotic. At the same time, I really like some endlers and may just put a big group of males in the tank.

It helps me to let the filter sleeve (sponge in my case) get a little dirty. As it clogs up it will filter out finer and finer particles. Also when you clean it, you may want to consider a good rinse out and not a change out. The bacteria build up on it can be sticky and help bind things out of the water.

I’m leaning towards some tetra, not sure which and shrimp. I may find some nice breed of small pleco and thats about it on fish. But again I may change my mind again so who knows.

Nice looking fish!
These are those fish that are almost aquatic dogs. Everything in that tank is about 4 years old and follow us around when we walk around the room. My 90 reef the fish are still skiddish, I think mostly because it's in the bedroom and there is less traffic in the room. These guys, not at all they are used to us and only hide when I'm doing a water change. My black oscar can almost be petted when you are feeding. My wife stopped me from tearing this tank a part and going saltwater with it because of her parrot fish. I'm kind of glad she did, I'd be sad to see my oscars go. The 180 will remain fresh until these guys are gone I guess.

So I went a direction I didn’t think I’d go. I went by a LFS on my work trip. They had just gotten a big shipment of different color guppies. I really like these guys so I snagged three different colors and a pleco.
