I started a build thread with a 180 gallon that was dissembled but I decided to ditch that because I didn't trust my self putting a new tank together from scratch. Instead, I got a 220 with the dimensions of 6ft long by 2 ft wide by 2 ft 6 in tall. I was going to go with a 180 with similar dimensions except it would have been 2 feet tall but seeing that I can add 6 more inches and get 40 more gallons I said why not. This tank is massive! I currently have a 125-gallon tank and a frag tank. I am going to move all my livestock over into this new tank.

So far I have the tank, sump, and rock. The only thing I have left to do is build a stand and drill the tank for a ghost overflow.

Current equipment

  • 3 Kessil a360we lights paired with aquatic life t5 hybrid.
  • Eshopps S-300 protein skimmer
  • 2 Dosing pumps
  • 2 powerheads (can't remember exact flow, upgrading to mp40 soon)
  • Return pump currently rated at 1400 gph but will upgrade
  • 275 lbs of Marco rock dry
  • 120 lbs Hawaii black sand
  • GFO/Carbon Reactor

I won this at Reef A Palooza Chicago 2019.

Current Live Stock

  • Purple tang
  • Powder blue tang
  • 2 clowns
  • 3 blue Chromis
  • Scooter blenny
  • Diamond Goby
  • Sailfin tang
  • Mixed tang
  • Foxface
  • Snowflake Eel
  • Copperband Butterfly
  • 6 line wrasse
  • Lawnmower blenny
  • Cleaner shrimp

I would like to add a yellow tang and a blue hippo to complete my collection with fish.

For the sump, I plan on adding 4 chambers. The sump is 75 gallons.
  • Chamber 1: Intake/skimmer.
  • Chamber 2: Live rock
  • Chamber 3: refugium/ chaeto grow out
  • Chamber 4: return pump

With the sump included the total volume of water will be close to 300 gallons.

I currently have a decent amount of SPS corals and zoanthids that I would like to move over to this new build.

I am trying to make this build a little slow because it does cost a decent amount to get all the equipment and I work part-time and go to school. So sorry if I don't update relatively fast.

Still have some work to do to make it blend in some more thinking of adding 2 more shelf’s at the top somewhere. This structure is measuring at 28” I wanted to go with 3 of these but there’s no way they will fit in my tank. So I’ll make one more but this one is going to be much longer than the one I’m showing.

what do you guys think of the first structure? There’s lots of room to place sps frags. I planned it so none of the structures are over another so I don’t have to worry about shading.

Got some more done. It’s hard to tell how the rock looks in the pictures. So weird maybe it’s just me but you can’t see depth well in the photos. Maybe when I get it into the tank It’ll look better.

I still have to add a few more ledges to both structures but first trying to think how I’m going to lift this into my tank without breaking anything. These pieces are well over 100 lbs each..... anyone got ideas?

I’m also having a problem with the cement cracking. Not sure what I’m doing wrong. Maybe it’s too much weight? Not thick enough pieces of cement? Maybe I’m getting the water to cement ratio wrong?

I had a few issues while making the stand. First my mom used all the extension cords for the Christmas lights.... she had them up the day adter Halloween. So I had to work close to the wall as I could and that was a pain. Not old thay the garage is filled with stuff because it’s getting cold so the outdoor furniture is put in the house.

I soon realized the ground wasn’t leveled and I had to redo a lot of my pieces because of it. But I got it fixed and finally finished. I plan on adding 2-3 more pieces of wood for support.

I’ll post more pictures when I add the doors and the sides.

almost done with the build next is the overflow box and drilling the tank then I’m finished

Well that tank ended up busting a seal in the middle of the night so I got rid of it and got a bigger tank.
